Born in Noble Co. on September 27, 1843. His father died while John was young, leaving him in the care of his mother. During his younger years John lived in Noble, Morgan and Washington Counties of Ohio. On November 20, 1863 he enlisted in Co. D 92nd Regiment Ohio Vol. Infantry and afterwards transfered to Co. C, 31st Regiment of Veteran Vol. and was discharged July 20, 1865. He was engaged in the battles of Resaca and Bentonville, and marched with Sherman to the sea. In May 1866 he located in Greene County, Indiana where he farmed 210 acres. On December 5, 1868 he married Georgianna AXTELL, daughter of George R AXTELL and Amanda TARNOHAN, also natives of Ohio. Two sons were born of this marriage, Harry Weir and David Humphrey. Georgianna died on July 15, 1890. John then married Emily Susan CHAPMAN, the daughter of William Ford CHAPMAN and Margaret Ann CASEY on May 5, 1891. John and Emily had four children, Stewart Pinckney, William Ezra, John E. and Georgia. John died on November 11, 1906 after cutting his own throat with a butcher knife and is buried in Solsberry Cemetary, Solsberry, Greene County, Indiana.
