Since he had 22 children there may be descendants interested in this article. "At the Dayton Soldiers Home, William J. McClure now in his 107th year, was born in New Jersey, and from his 15th to 30th year was in the Merchant Service, visiting every port in the world. In 1803, he turned trapper on the Ohio River, then he finally enlisted in the army -captured at Hull's surrender; freed; fought at Lundy's Lane under Gen. scott and wounded. At age 47 he saved a woman from drowning at Charlestown, S.C. and married her. She died at New Orleans. Later he served as scout under Gen. Jackson in Fla. then back to sea and captured and enslaved by Arabs; freed; then Marine Service under Admr. Rogers; Seminole Wars and Mexican War. Then to sea again and was one of nine saved in wreck on Irish coast. Tired of the sea he went west, and was for nine year mail carrier between Cincinnati and Louisville, Ky. He narrowly escaped where he married three more wives, having 22 children, -only three survive. His last wife was 45 years his junior, and she died 1871, aged 40 years----The old gentleman is still active and talks about going back to Missouri in the summer in a skiff----He has been at Dayton since October. The strange stories of his wanderings (some omitted) are believed true as papers of his service and age are authenticated." (note: Wonder what became of him??? Did he go back to Missouri?) ==== Maggie_Ohio Mailing List ====
