Newlan, 81, of Leesburg, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Oakland Nursing Center. He was born June 7, 1916, near Leesburg, the son of Jacob William and Mary Alice (Davidson) Newlan. He was a retired engineer with the Defense Construction Supply Company with 31 years service. He was a veteran of World War II receiving a purple heart for injuries received in battle. He is a member of the Leesburg Friends Church, a member of the Leesburg Lodge #78 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati, Chapter #57 Order of the Eastern Star, Leesburg Lions Club, had been treasurer of the Leesburg Life Squad, had been a central committee person for the Leesburg East Highland County Republican Party, had been secretary of the 337th Depot Co. U.S. Army (Ret.)., a member of the Disabled American Veterans, was the founding member of the Friendly View Apartments Board and was the originator of the Leesburg Luminary. He was a graduate of Leesburg High School and Ohio State University. He is survived by six nieces, Dorothy Ramsey of Leesburg, Wanda Gates of Hilliard, Doris Nelle Perrine of Zanesville, Frances Welsh and Evelyn Humphrey of Washington C.H. and Mary Priest of Hillsboro; one nephew, Paul Miller of Leesburg; a special friend and caregiver, Becky Miller of Leesburg; and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Etta Marie (Newlan) Miller; one brother, Charles M. Newlan; one niece, Helen Penwell; and two nephews, Billy Bob Newlan and William Newlan. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Leesburg Friends Church. Pastor John Fitzgerald will officiate. Burial, with military honors being rendered by the Highland County Honor Guard, will follow in the White Oak Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Friends Church in Leesburg. Masonic services will be held at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leesburg Friends Church, P.O. Box 393, Leesburg, Ohio 45135. The Turner Funeral Home of Leesburg is serving the family.
