Buckingham, 87, of Greenfield, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at her residence. She was born Mabel Juanita Forsythe on Jan. 20, 1911, in Buckskin Township, Ross County. She was the fourth and youngest daughter of Clinton Forsythe and Naomi Hedricks Forsythe. Mrs. Buckingham lived most of her youth in South Salem. She graduated from Buckskin High School in May 1929, one of seven who graduated from the school that year. On June 4, 1929, she married Jennings Bryan Buckingham in Chilicothe. After marriage she and her husband resided in northern Ohio, where she lived for the next 20 years. After her husband was stricken with multiple sclerosis in 1937, Mrs. Buckingham worked as a cook at Oberlin College to support her husband and two children. After her husband's death on June 18, 1946, Mrs. Buckingham and her children continued to live in Oberlin until 1950. Then, she and her children moved to Washington Court House and she became the owner/operator of a rest home. In March 1953, Mrs. Buckingham moved to Greenfield and started Buckingham Nursing Home, which she owned until her retirement in December 1977. She was a former member of the South Salem Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Buckingham, and by seven grandchildren. They are: Robert Buckingham, Lisa Jenks, Sue Ann Kakavas, Toni Taylor, Denise Larkin, Tabitha Everhart and Sam Everhart. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Buckingham was preceded in death by her father in 1949, by her mother in 1972 and by her son, Robert Bryan Buckingham, on Jan. 23, 1961. In addition, she was predeceased by her sisters, Doris Forsythe Jones Butts, Margaret Forsythe Arnott and Hazel Forsythe Stroup. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 16, at Murray Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Greenfield Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. on Friday, May 15. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenfield Area Life Squad, 640 North Washington St., Greenfield.
