Ohio CRUSHED BY THE CARS. --------------------------------- Peter Weaver, of Eagleville, Run Over by the Cars at North Baltimore-Resulting in death. On Tuesday, July 28th, Peter Weaver and his son Lloyd, started with a team to Hoystville, to stack some wheat on his farm near that place. When arriving at North Baltimore, the father told his boy to drive to the road crossing west of town, where his son was to await the arrival of the father, he telling his boy that he would go and purchase some bologna, to take with them. They boy drove to the designated place awaiting the coing of the father, but no one came. At length some teamster passing by told the boy that some man was reported killed by a train. Mr. Weaver had passed up the track with the purpose of meeting his boy at the crossing as agreed upon, when a local freight train passed him, he stepping to the south side of the track, and paying no further attention to the train, supposed it had passed on east but having passed from a side track to the main track, suddenly backed up, striking Mr. Weaver throwing him face forward the right shoulder striking and lying across the rail, when the wheel of the rear car severed the body. He was taken to the North Baltimore Hotel, where Dr. Henry was summoned, doing all that he could do to aleviate his sufferings. He lingered from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. when death came to his releif. There seems to be no blame attached to any one, as the train men gave every signal to clear the track, but the warning signal was not heard, or if heard not obeyed. The deceased came from a hardy race being the son of Alexander Weaver. He was born in Westmoreland Couny, Pa. March 2, 1811, he was therefore 80 years, 4 months and 25 days of age at the time of his death. He had been married twice, the first time to Mrs. Margaret Rine, December 26, 1837, by Daniel Robbins, J.P. of Bloom, and the first white couple married in that township. There were 11 children born to his first wife, four sons and seven daughters survive him to his first marriage. His first wife died Sept. 4, 1871, age 51 years, 4 months, and 27 days. On August 2, 1871, at the age of 51 he married Mrs. Catherine Evilsizer, the ceremony having been performed by the ?oditor of the Derrick. Three children were born to his second wife, two daughters and one son, the widow and eleven children survive him. Mr Weaver has been a resident of Wood County since the year 1836 a man of iron constitution, wonderful physical indurance. Had he been educated in the modern business matters ought have been a successful financier. In poitical and religious thought was peculiar, yet of rather debateful cast of mind. He has lived to see Wood county "bloom and blossom as the rose", and seemed to enjoy the modern improvements that have been ushered into being since his advent into the county, with consideriable satisfaction. The entire community enter into sympathy with the widow, children and friends, at his cruel and sudden death. The funeral occurs on Friday 10 o'clock A.M. at the church at Eagleville. Interment at Bloom Chapel. ================== Sheri Nye, msnye@suite224.net ------------------------------ X-Message: #3 Date: Sun, 13 Dec 1998 15:44:33 -0700 From: "Cindy " Subject: BIO: Fleming, 1822-1912, Athens Co. Daniel Fleming was born in Athens county near Bishopville, October 22, 1822. He is the son of John and Christina Fleming. John Fleming was born in Germany in 1777, and came to the United States and settled in New York at the age of fifteen. Our subject attended the public and private schools of New York until about seventeen years of age, when he secured work on a sailing vessel plying between New York and New Orleans, making several trips between those points. Becoming acquainted with the engineers of the "New York and Harlem" Railway, then being built by George Law, one of the few millionaries of that day, he engaged as fireman on one of their crude, but at that time wonderful engines. He was afterwards sent to the "Mohawk and Hudson" Railway, which connected Schenectady and Albany. In this position, he was an engineer and ran the "John Bull," an engine which was built in England, and which was exhibited at the Columbian Exposition held at Chicago in 1893. He was also employed on the steam vessel, "Oregon," which, owing to her size and the fact that she was propelled by steam, was an object of much curiosity. In 1845, Mr. Fleming returned to Ohio and the scenes of his childhood, and purchased a farm of fifty acres; he was married May 16, 1846 to Lucy P. Gardner, daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Smith) Gardner. Thirteen children were born to them, seven of which survive- Joseph, William, John, Theodore, Lincoln, Julia, and Edith.
