TOMPKINS OBITUARY - CHARLES E. TOMPKINS Medina County Gazette January 1897 Charlie E. TOMPKINS, was born in Weymouth, Medina Co., Ohio, April 25, 1862, and died of typhoid fever on Dec. 29, 1896. He live with his parents on a farm in Weymouth until he became of age, when he began work for the King Iron Bridge Co., and had been in its employ the greater part of the time up to his death. While living at home with his parents he received a good education and for several winters before he became of age he engaged in teaching school. He was a successful teacher but gave up this line of work for an employment he liked better. He was married to Grace NICKELS of McCutchensville, Ohio on the 26th of Dec 1891, who now survives him, Charlie was generous to all but he was most loyal to his friends and never betrayed the slightest confidence they sought to place in him. He leaves a wife, a mother, four sisters and one brother, his near relatives mourn his untimely death. Resolutions of Respect are offered by Weymouth Tent E.T.O.M. ARTICLE-MEDINA GAZETTE JANUARY 11, 1897 Charlie E. TOMPKINS was brought here from Suterville, Pennsylvania., and laid in the graveyard beside his father the last day of the old year. He went to Suterville, election day to work on a King Iron Bridge Co., bridge. His wife joined him there the last week in November and only four days after her arrival he was taken with typhoid fever and for four weeks she nursed him through his troubled delirium, night and day alone and it is peculiarly sad that he died without ever knowing it, and that his mother went to him less than a week before the death. It was probably not known how bad his case was and the town is full of it's own sick, but after his death his wife and mother were shown every kindness and helped off on their sad journey by sympathizing strangers. They were met at the home he had left a short time before by weeping friends and neighbors who did all that could be done for them. Tom Lewis and Amos Sedgwick, two Weymouth boys were taken with the fever and were able to reach their homes. Sedgwick is at his home in Cleveland and Leavitt is at his father's in this place. J. NICKOLS of McCutchensville attended the funeral of his son-in-law, C. E. Tompkins and remained some days with his daughter.
