Nancy R. Taylor Livermore, CA ggGrandaughter of Laura (Godley) and Kinsey Robinson email: ohmmoose@home.com Columbus, Ohio June 11th 1889 Mrs. K Robinson Zaleski, O. My Dear Friend: I will endeavor now to answer your letter of May 26th. I hope I have not delayed the matter too long. I shall not attempt to give an extended history of Kinseys army life. I presume you only want a brief statement of the important points. As to his soldierly qualities I can embrace that in a very few words. His record as a soldier was a pure and stainless as his private life was honorable and manly. To those, therefore, who knew him as a husband, father and citizen they can well understand which manner of a soldier he was. There was no Condition, Circumstance or duty, however irksome, unpleasant or dangerous he did not perform well and faithfully. He was a soldier because he was patriotic, and because he loves his Country. I do not recollect of his ever having missed a day of duty. There was no man in the Union Army that did more fully and completely his whole duty than Kinsey Robinson. Loyalty and patriotism and unselfish devotion to every duty were the distinguishing characteristics of his soldier life. I did not know Kinsey prior to his muster into the service. during our army life together we were close and intimate friends, with good relations continued throughout all his after life. He enlisted about July 1st 1863 as a prive in CoG 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery. The Regiment at that time was stationed at Covington Ky. On August 10th, following his muster in in July, he was promoted to Quarter Master Sergeant of the Company, which position he held until March 19, 1864 when he was promoted to Sr. Quarter Master Sargeant of the Regiment. He held this position two months, when by his own request he was returned to the Company and assumed his former duties as Q.M. Sergeant of the Company which he continued to hold until his discharge in August 1865. The History of the 1st O.V.H. Art is not one of many battles and great loss of life. But its entire history is one of much labor and hard and honorable service. During its first nine months of its existance it constructed eight miles of fortifications extending from the Ohio River three miles below Covington to the Ohio River above Newport Ky making Cincinnati and Covington two of the strongest fortified cities in the United States. In January it was ordered to Knoxville Tennessee, marching over the mountains through rain, snow and mud. On arriving at Knoxville it fortified that city as strongly as Cincinnati and Covington. From that time until the close of the war it kept the East Tennessee Valley from Chattanooga to the Virginia line free from Rebel occupation. Its time was chiefly occupied in marching up and down the valley, frequently being engaged with small bands of Rebel raiders. In all this service Kinsey took a part and did his fully duty. Yours truly - N.S. Matthews I have jsut seen Mr. Thomas of the S. & S.O. Hawe, he assures me that your children will be at house over the day of your memorial excursion. I would like very much to be present myself, but we are very busy and I do not see how I can do so. I trust, as I know you will, have an occasion worthy of the splendid character of the man to whome memory it is made.
