Things just kept turning over in my head and sleep was the last thing on my mind. Finally dozed off about four this a.m. and have spent a busy day, and even then couldn't get the Bible pages off my mind. I do believe we have our work cut out for us. First I tried to figure out who might have compiled the record. The last date of entry was 1857 or 59. After that the record was not added to. The nature of the list leads me to believe that it was prepared by a doting grandparent, wanting to keep track of their children and grandchildren. The likely candidate is Mary (Davis) Gordon or her husband, Joseph Gordon, compiled before their deaths. I have examined many Bibles and feel that there may have been a couple of more pages that are now lost. These would have had the birth data for Mary and Joseph Gordon, and maybe the birth dates of their children, which are not given. In going through my notes I found the 1850 census of McArthur Township, Logan County, OH for the families of both Oliver P. Gordon and Joseph Gordon. They are: Oliver P. Gordon 36, m. farmer Ohio Catherine Gordon 30 f Maryland Wilson Gordon 12 m Ohio Mary Gordon 10 f Ohio Amanda Gordon 8 f Ohio Joseph Gordon 5 m Ohio Phebe Gordon 1 f Ohio Joseph Gordon 66 m farmer Pennsylvania Mary Gordon 60 f Maryland Nelson R. Gordon 26 farmer m Ohio Wealthy C. Gordon 39 f Ohio Vandian Oppenheim (?) 14 m Ohio David W. (?) Sowls (?) 8 m Ohio Henry Helman 27 m (?) I need to go back to the original census record to see if I can find a clearer microfilm copy, for as you can see both Vandiven and David are both on the list and on the Bible pages, while Henry Helman is not, leading me to believe that the first two, including your ancestor, were considered valued members of the Gordon family and were probably raised by the Gordons until their respective deaths, which now we know occurred for Mary in 1855 and probably for Joseph before 1860, for I have never been able to find him in the census record for 1860. Unless, of course, he was living with one of his children or grandchildren when the census was taken and did not appear in the index. Now that brings us to the next question how were they related by blood or adoption. Since they are placed directly after Wealthy C. Gordon,' location, it might mean that they were her children, fathered by two different men. But why would she use her maiden name, unless they may have been natural children and they were taken into their grandfather's home along with their mother to provide a home for them. It is apparent from the Bible pages that she married after the census was taken to a man by the name of Carr. If they were her children, did she take them with her, and what happened to them after her death in 1857. And if this scenario is not correct, just how by blood were they related, the children of brothers or sisters, cousins, or grandchildren of older Gordon children that we have no record for? Or if it is a case of adoption where were they living when they adopted the children and what were the circumstances. There are other discrepancies, which probably have explanation, but need to be researched. For instance our family records show that Nelson Gordon married Elizabeth Beam, the youngest sister of Catherine. I suppose this could be the Susan Elizabeth he married, but it would necessitate that she had first married a Young. We will need to find that marriage, if possible. The Oliver T or P. probably is easy to explain, as the document is faint and the top of the "p" may be all that showed. Also David's middle initial appears to be a W. on the census record, and it might have been taken for a middle name on the Bible pages. These are not huge problems and will probably have a simple answer, when we put the Bible pages and the census record under closer inspection with a magnifying glass. The one person that I cannot place is the Joseph Robertson d. 18 Sept 1856. Obviously he is not a brother to either Mary or Joseph, for his name is not right. However, he might be a maternal grandfather on either side. And again he might be a Joseph Robertson Gordon, one of Mary and Joseph's children, who is found in the Beam family history, which I am putting in the mail for you. The Beam historian speaking of Oliver P. Gordon and Catherine Beam states, "The family numbered seven and they are as follows: Amanda (Gordon) Rosebrook, dead Nelson V. Gordon (died in Andersonville Prison) Elizabeth (Gordon) Mayarm, dead John Gordon, dead Joseph Gordon, dead Phoebe (Gordon) Born, dead Mary (Gordon) Rayl, dead The grandchildren are as follows: C.F. Born, married and has seven children R.C. Born, married and has four children Oscar Born O.P.G. Mayarm So you can see it is a fairly large family. As my grandfather Roscoe Conklin Born was orphaned at an early age he was raised by a Beam relative at Rensselaer, Indiana and did not have a whole lot of contact with his Gordon relatives. I have spent a lot more time researching my other lines, as they were easier and I had access to living relatives. Guess it is now time to research the Gordons. I do not think these Bible pages would have descended to you if you did not share a fairly close tie with the Gordon family. And even if your ancestor was adopted into the family it is clear that he was considered to be a child of the family. What I will endeavor to do is establish a path of immigration to see where these families may have intersected and check for other records that may shed some light of a history that is of interest to the both of us. With our meeting on the Internet we have cleared some of the mystery from the landscape and can see a little clearer. However, it only creates a deeper mysteries that needs to be solved. Thanks for the tip on the obits. They may have records of Oliver P.'s death and of Amanda Rosebrook that may add to our knowledge. Again, thank you for sending the e-mail with all the wonderful information. He said he never knew anything about Grampa Soules early history. In my searching, I found that he had 3 children. My parents only knew of one, My Dad's mother's mother named Maude Soules. I know that David Nees Soules is the correct spelling. My Dad says he was always told that Grampa Soules was born in Bellefontain, Ohio. I found that he was in the 96th Regiment OVI in the Civil War from 1862 till 1865. He joined in Delaware County, Ohio. I have forms to send and get his Civil War records, which I will do real soon. Sometime after the war, he moved to Pleasantville, In. and married Louisa J. Smith. I haven't found those records yet- there are 2 Pleasantvilles. With her he had the 3 children. Maude Soules, Lizzie Soules, and #3. Maude Soules married William Toliver and they had one child, my GrandMother. She was born Iris Glenn Toliver in 1892. Maude died in 1903 and William died in 1906. So Grandma went to live with Grampa Soules. We know very little about her parents. Grampa Soules had moved to Clay City Illinois where he bought the old Courthouse and made it his home. His Death Certificate says he lived there for 64 years. Louisa had died and he remarried Mary Alice Enlo Soules. There may have been another wife in there. Mary Alice was married 4 times altogether. I have his will. He left half to Mary Alice + the house, and the other half to 2 guys named VanMatre. We don't know who they are. He got mad at Grandma and left her $1 in the will. The VanMatre guys were to inherit the house after Mary Alice died. Mary Alice was never married to anyone named VanMatre. More mystery. There was a newspaper article about Grampa Soules in The Clay County Advocate in 1976. It was submitted by a man who I don't know and he has died with no known family. Grampa Soules was the oldest living Civil War Veteran in Clay City. He died in 1937, 4 days before he was to turn 95 of Pneumonia. He is written about in two Illinois books- Sailor Springs History and The History of Clay County, Illinois. Here is the interesting part. He was a harness maker by trade. One book said he could be found a stitchin and a mendin. He was called Uncle Davey by the townspeople. Here is another interesting fact- He was a little guy-weighed 96 pounds. Dad says he was quite a character. I have several pictures of him. It is quite interesting how I acquired the Bible. I will tell you sometime when I have more time. It almost got thrown out in 1958. I saved it. I was in the fourth grade. There are also some pictures of people whom I suspect might be Gordons. We have a lot of sharing to do sometime. I hope to meet you sometime. More Later. I was told the society did not want this distributed because they are trying to raise enough money to make this informaition available on CD, that they can sell for a fund raiser. However, that could never happen I was advised. Hope this information is helpful to someone searching for relatives, I have some photo's of Pleasant Hill cemetery. [Part 5] Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit To: DJulien@aol.com From: Wizzofozl0@aol.com Hi Barb and Dale, Just returned from the library at Valparaiso, Indiana where they have copies of the census for Ohio. Followed Joseph Gordon through all the census records from 1820 to 1860. Quite a surprise to find him still living in 1860. He was living alone. None of the people who were with him in 1850 were anywhere near to be found. Am sending copies of the census records. I did find the Obenchains though. Vandiver L. Obenchain m Mary A. Ingerson on 17 Jan 1858 in Wyandot County, OH. Later he is found living in Putnam County, OH near or in the Village of Bellmore with his wife Mary, and daughter, Eva and son, Rousew. A Sally Obenchane, listed as a domestic servant, is also living in the household. Vandiver is by then 33 years of age and a successful Harness Maker. From the IGI it appears that there quite a few of them in the general area, mostly from Logan, Clark, Lucas, and Hardin Counties. However, I did not find any connecting link that I could recognize to the Davis or Gordon family. For the time being, this current research leads me to believe that the above Vandiver was an adopted child of Mary and Joseph Gordon. He is most likely the child of the widow, Mary Oberchain, 55, of VA (this could be a link to the Davis family, for Mary came from VA as well) Living with her are her daughter, Mary, 25, and Amanda 18 in the 1860 census. Besides Vandiver, living with Joseph and Mary Gordon in 1850, I also found a Susannah Oberchain, 14, living with a Thomas Nevels in McArthur Township. She is most likely a sister of Vandion's, and might even be the above Sally, who was living with Vandiver in Putnam County. I did not have as much luck tracing your ancestor though. Did get a clear copy of the 1850 Logan County census though and the middle initial could be read N as well as W. A. Saul Shaul 42 in the 1850 census did catch my attention. He was living in McArthur Township with his family and his wife too was from VA, but even more important his occupation was listed as Sadler, the same occupation that Vandiver followed in Putnam County. He lived very near Phebe Harrod, who also came from VA (a possible link to the Davis line) and Samuel Harrod, who came from PA. Interesting in light of the middle names of Oliver P. Gordon's daughters. There are many Souls in Hardin County and in the surrounding counties. So it is possible that one of these may emerge. Also found a couple of Sowells in the 1840 census of Logan County, Perry Twp. p. 7 Thomas and Cyrus were their names. Guess we will have to leave this search for another day. I was running out of time. I did read William H. Rosebrook's history again and found a very interesting line, "I then moved to Rushsylvania south of town on the John NEER farm where I lived four years. (Suppose he made a typo and it should read John Nees farm?) Just a thought. Are you sure of the Nees spelling for David's name? Might it be Neer? I''ll try to get all of this research copied and send to you. Great fun. Gerald -------------------------------- End of OH-FOOTSTEPS-D Digest V99 Issue #621 *******************************************
