Grandstaff, civil war veteran and most highly respected citizen of Bucyrus, passed away at his home on West Oakwood Ave. Sunday evening [Feb. 23, 1920] at 9:30 o'clock. Death was due to a complication of diseases from which he had been suffering since the first of January, being in a serious condidtion the past week. William Grandstaff was a son of Moses and Amanda (Bowers) Grandstaff and was born in Morrow Co., July 17, 1844. At the age of six he moved with his parents to Licking Co. residing there until his marriage to Miss Hester Grandstaff, which occurred February 28, 1867. Mrs. Grandstaff passed away on the 3rd of November, 1902. When the Civil War broke out and the call came for volunteers Mr. Grandstaff was a boy of 17, but he felt the need of his services and answered his country's call by enlisting with the 121st Ohio Volunteers. He was wounded in the battle of Kenisaw Mtn. and was discharged September 20 1864. After his marriage he resided on a farm in Delaware Co. moving to this city 31 years ago. He was a member of the Christian Union church in Licking County and since his residence in this city has attended the First Methodist Church. Mr. Grandstaff was a man of good character and a highly respected citizen. He was past commander of Keller Post G. A. R. of which he was a member. One daughter Miss Ora Grandstaff, at home; two sons, James A. of Bucyrus, Harvey M. of Toledo; two grandchildren, Mrs. B. J. Carl of Detroit, Mrs. William Langley of Youngstown, and one great grandchild, Virginia Marie Carl of Detroit survive. There are also two brothers, Winfield Grandstaff of Delaware County and Elva of Granville. Funeral services will be held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock with Rev. W. H. Miller officiating." Services were held in Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted by her pastor Rev. A. C. Thober, and interment was in Union Cemetery here. Surviving are her husband, and three sons; Arthur, of Elmore; Edward, of Saginaw, Mich., and Theodore of Woodville; two daughters, Mrs. Freda Krieger and Mrs. Edna Magsig, both of Elmore; another daughter, Mrs. Alma Schaaf, also of Elmore, died seven years ago. There are also three step-children: Mrs. Anna Durdel of Oak Harbor, and Mrs. Martha Truman and Emil Deno, of Elmore; also one brother, Harmon Sauer, of this place, and three sisters: Mrs. Wm. Thom, Merril Mich., Mrs. Augusta Klingbeil, Elliston, and Mrs. Ferdinand Yoster, Trowbridge; also, twelve grandchildren and five step-grandchildren. Mrs. Deno was born in Germany in 1870 and came to America with her father, two sisters and a brother in 1882, settling in Elliston, where others of the family had already located. On March 15, 1894, she was married to John Deno of Elmore, by Rev. Deno Died Thursday Night. Dec. 21; John L. Deno, 83, retired farmer, died at his home on West Rice street about 11 oclock Thursday night, of complications. Funeral services were held from the home and then from Trinity Lutheran Church Sunday afternoon. Rev. A. C. Thober officiating and interment in Union Cemetery. Mr. Deno was born in Germany July 21, 1856, and at the age of 16 years came with his parents to America and settled at Elliston, Ohio. In 1886 he was married to Miss Bertha Sauer, and to this union were born six children, Anna, Emma, Emilia, Martha, Emil and William. In 1892 his first wife died and two years later he was united in marriage to Miss Edith Sauer. Six children were born to this union also, Edward, Theodore, Arthur, Frieda, Alma, and Edna. The family lived on the Deno farm north of Elmore on the Elliston road until 1919 when he with his wife and the children still at home moved to Elmore. His wife died in 1936 and most of the time since then he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Elmer Kroeger, and family. His health began to fail last June and five weeks ago he became bedfast. He suffered his first stroke about two weeks ago and another one the Saturday before his death. Surviving are eight children: Mrs. Albert Durdel of Oak Harbor; Mrs. John Truman, Emil and Mrs.. Elmer Kroeger of Elmore; Edward of Saginaw, Mich; Theodore of Woodville, Mrs. Ben Magsig of Gibsonburg, and Arthur of Fremont; also 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a son of John and Eva Quillman and moved with his parents to Henry Co. when the deceased was but two years of age. In 1889 he was united in marriage with Miss Gertrude Allen and to this union were born two children, John Robert, and Mrs. Beryl Glynn of Anchorage, Alaska. He was preceded in death by his son and first wife. In 1900 he was again united in marriage to Miss Lillian Brown, to whom were born two children, Mrs. Helen Kraegel and Mrs. Hilda Peterson, both of Napoleon. After the loss in death of his second companion, Mr. Quillman again married in 1927 to Mrs. Carrie M. Dunlap, who is now left to mourn his departure, together with three daughters and nine grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Lucy Morris of Tiffin. There also remain nine step children: Mrs. Hazel Shiarla, Napoleon; Mrs. Florence Mian, Cleveland; Chester N. Dunlap, US Navy; Howard Dunlap, Adrian, Mich.; Mrs. Mae Steinbooke, Columbus; Dorance Dunlap, Adrian, Mich.; Mrs. Helen Robinson, Wauseon; Mrs. Grace Rothenberger, Napoleon; Miss Virginia Dunlap, of Naperville, Ill; and four step-granchildren.
