" Need we offer an apology for not issuing our newspaper this week and last - whilst our fellow -citizens and neighbors are sick and dying all around us daily ? Every business, house and mechanic shop in our town, has for several days been closed - and we have been sick and have no heart to work. For a few hours at a time, our citizens cheer up, believing that the sickness is over, but all of a sudden we hear of new cases which keeps us almost continually despondent. Sunday, July 27, 1851 will never be forgotten by the citizens of West Union; there were, on that day, six burials at our public burying ground, five of whom were apparently in the enjoyment of good health on Friday evening: yea, some of them were well on Saturday . On Monday morning, our citizens commenced leaving town, and by Saturday night , fully two thirds of our population was off in different directions, during which time the disease raged with increased violence. "The following list embraces those who have died of cholera and other diseases in West Union and may be relied upon as emphatically correct: Frances and George Shinn, Mrs. Elizabeth Lytle, Francis A.G. Shinn, H.N. Cole, Mrs. Margaret Buchanan, Mrs. Mary Lafferty, John Buchanan, Thomas Prather, Wilson Prather, Ann Olivia Prather, Mary O. Prather, George Grant, Margaret McCaully, William Santee, Miss Caroline Lafferty, Mrs. Catherine McCauly, Louis Sanders, Alice Brooks Prather, Mrs. Jane Crawford, Mrs. Mary Hitchens, Frances H. Hayslip, Mrs. Margaret A. Hayslip, Andrew Haines, Cornelia Santee, Mrs. Elizabeth Meider, General Joseph Darlington, Mrs. Sanders and Robert Jackman, Esq. " The following persons died in this vicinity with cholera: Parker Y. Young, Miss Mary Young, Mrs. Mary Owen, Miss Elizannah Owen and Arthur McFarland,Sr. " In this place on the 19th instant, Jeremiah Grant, aged 6 years, and on the 30th, Sophia Grant, aged 6 years. These children were twins - their parents being dead , they were living with their uncle, George Grant - they had the measles, which is what was suppose to have caused their deaths. " on the 14th ult.,(?) Mrs. Abigail Gray, aged 56 years. The deceased was a very pious and amiable lady, a kind neighbor and a good citizen. "Many extravagant reports have been put in circulation in regard to the spread of the cholera in our mist. The people in some parts of the county have it that the houses of the late W. Prather and Buchanan were shut up for several days and when opened, were found to be full o green flies, et cetra. We are glad to have the proud satisfaction of informing our brethren in the county that all such reports are false. Our citizens have acted very prudently, having seen that every house was properly ventilated, and every thing kept nice and clean. "We are requested to state, for the benefit of the subscribers of the Intelligencer, that in consequence of the death of Mr. Jackman, that publication will cease for the present. ------------------------------ X-Message: #2 Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 17:17:12 -0600 From: "marv" Subject: OBITS from Portage County Democrat #1 5 Apr 1854 BLAKE, Caroline A.--Brimfield, 19 Mar, wife of Buel A. dau of Enoch WILCOX, of Greenville,Ms MESSENGER, Anvirus H.--Freedom, 24i, 7 mo. only son of Franklin and Caroline M. Prout obituary Sandusky, Oh Register, Wednesday, March 29, 1967, pg. 1, col. 1 Dr Prout, BGSU President, Dies in City Hospital One of the best known educators in the midwest, Dr Frank J. Prout, 84, died Tuesday night in Good Samaritan Hospital after an illness of several months. He was superintendent of the Sandusky Public Schools for 18 years before being named president of Bowling Green State University, where he served for 14 years. He lived at 732 Wayne St. Dr Prout was regarded as one of the most productive administrators in the 57-year history of BGSU, where he was its third president. Appoinated to the presidency in 1939, Dr Prout went to Bowling Green at a crucial time in its history. It was under his administration that Bowling Green finally shed it normal (teacher) college image and became recognized as a growing university. He wasn't president long when World War II cmae and most of the student body became soldiers overnight. After the war, veterans streamed back to Bowling Green with federal grants helping them to a college education. Housing and parking suddenly became two major problems. He forsaw the explosion in university enrollments and made efforts to see that Bowling Green would be able to handle its share of the college-bound students. Dr Prout was the first Bowling Green president to make use of legislation permitting universities to issue bonds for building dormitories and other self liquidating structures. Several dormitories on campus were either constructed or begun during his administration. Univesity enrollment nearly quadrupled from pre-war figures, campus acrage doubled and the total number of permanent buildings rose to nearly 50. While the most noticeable of his accomplishments were physical growth, he was responsible for the beginning of Bowling Green's Graduate School and the addition of new programs. He was proud that he developed a fine faculty and administrative staff to keep pace with Bowling Green's growth. It was also under his administration that fraternity and sorority groups dropped their local status for national affiliations with recognized and leading qualities. Dr Prout retired from the president's post in 1951 and was succeeded by Dr. Ralph W. McDonald. Dr Prout was born Jan. 4, 1883, at Prout's Station south of Sandusky. After graduating from Sandusky High School in 1902, he entered Ohio Wesleyan University where he received a bachelor's degree in 1906. In 1907, he earned a master's degree from Ohio State University. He holds honorary degrees from Ohio University (1919), Ohio Wesleyan (1924), Miami University (1951) and Bowling Green (1952). He taught history at Ohio Wesleyan and Zanesville High School in 1914. A year later he became superintendent of schools in Chillicothe, a position he held until taking a similar post in the Sandusky school system in 1921. For 18 years at Sandusky he helped develop what was considered a fine school system while earning a reputation in Ohio as a leading educator and administrator. In 1933 he was appointed by Gov. George White to the Bowling Green University Board of Trustees but was not reappointed when his term expired in 1938. Dr Prout was elected president of Bowling Green in 1939. He succeeded Dr R. E. Offenhauer who was president for only one year before being killed in an automobile accident in 1938. As Bowling Green's president, Dr Prout gained a reputation for getting things done and became a symbol of the University's growth. Popular among students and faculty, he brought a personal touch to the presidency, something that became more and more difficult as the University's enrollment grew. As President Emeritus Dr Prout maintained an active interest in the University. A frequent visitor to the campus from his Cedar Point Chaussee home, he has given freely of his services to University committees and functions. He was an advisor to Dr McDonald, his successor, and helped supervise landscaping for the University. The latter duty was a carryover from his pastime of growing flowers and shrubs. Dr Prout didn't remain retired long. In 1955 he became interim president of Ohio Wesleyan University, his alma mater. He held the interim position until 1957. During that time he was also an ex-officio member of the Ohio Wesleyan's Board of Trustees. In 19556, Ohio Wesleyan presented him an Alumni Award in recognition of his service to the University. He was also made a life member of the OWU board of trustees. The Prout name has become a permanent part of the Bowling Green campus. In 1951, the Board of Trustees named the Frank J. Prout Chapel in his honor. The chapel is a quaint, colonial building and is one of the most attractive structure on campus. In 1955, a $750,000 residence hall for women was named for his first wife, the former Alice Flagel of Zanesville, killed in an automobile accident in April 1953. Alice Prout Hall houses nearly 300 Bowling Green coeds. Dr Prout holds memberships in various civic organizations and several honorary and professional fraternities - Alpha Phi Omega (service), Delta Sigma Rho (forensics), Kappa Delta Pi (education), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership), Phi Delta Kappa (education), Phi Delta Theta (social) and Sigma Delta Psi (athletics). He is a former trustee of the Ohioana Library Association and member of the Advisory Board of the Ohio Congress of Parent-Teachers. In addition to his other affiliations Dr Prout was a life long member of the Methodist Church and locally was a member of the Sandusky Rotary Club and the Frohman Foundation. Surviving are his widow, the former Ethel House Minor; two daughters Mrs Edward Dauterich, Cincinnati and Mrs Andrew Gordon, Sandusky; five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs Walker Buel, Washington, D.C. and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice in 1954 and a brother, Dr Allen Prout. Dr Herbert Thompson, Lakeside, will conduct private funeral services on Thursday at Sand Hill Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Prout Chapel on the BGSU campus. ------------------------------ X-Message: #4 Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 19:05:02 EST From: CrowSH@aol.com Subject: Ethel (House) Minor Prout obit.
