D. Published 1904 Sayings From Speeches and Writings of Ex-President Hayes "We have a fair fighting chance to win." "I would rather go to the war, if I knew I was to lose my life, than to live through and after it without taking part in it." "To perpetuate the Union and to abolish slavery were the work of the war. To educate the uneducated is the appropriate work of peace...The soldier of the Union has done his work, and has done it well. The work of the schoolmaster is now in order." "We must get rid of fixed sentences against hardened criminals. They should remain in prison until they are cured." "Whenever prisons are managed under the spoils system it injures the political party that does it, and the prison in which it is done." "There is no agreement between prisons and politics." "It must be regarded as a stain on any man who does not do all he can for the welfare of the men whose labor has made his wealth." Asked if he would be a candidate by an importunate friend, he replied, "George E. Pugh said there is no political hereafter; content with the past, I am not in a state of mind about the future. It is for us to act well in the present." "God loves Ohio or he would not have given her such a galaxy of heroes to defend the nation in its hour of trial." "We must believe that Cain was wrong and that we are our brothers keepers." "Our flag should wave over States, not over conquered provinces." "Universal suffrage should rest upon universal education. To this end liberal permanent provision should be made for the support of free schools by the State Governments, and if need be, supplemented by legitimate aid from national authority." "It is my earnest purpose to put forth my best efforts in behalf of a civil policy which will forever wipe out in our political affairs the color line, and the distinction between North and South, that we may have not merely a united North or a united South but a united country." "We should always be mindful of the fact that he serves his party best who serves his country best." "The love of flowers and the love of animals go together." "Touching temperance, there is in this country, at least, no half-way house between total abstinence and the wrong side of the question." "In any community crimes increase as education, opportunity, and property decrease. Whatever spreads ignorance and poverty spreads discontent and causes crime." "I never sought promotion in the army. I preferred to be one of the good colonels rather than one of the poor generals." ------------------------------ X-Message: #2 Date: Wed, 24 Feb 1999 09:15:58 EST From: Corpmiz@aol.com Subject: OBIT: Gardinier, Samuel, 1905, Fulton Co CALLED HIGHER DEATH OF WELL KNOWN PIONEER PREACHER Samuel Gardinier departed this life at the home of his daughter, Jan 5, 1905, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 5 days. Funeral services were held Saturday the 7th, conducted by Rev. Motter of the M. E. church of Metamora, using as his text for an excellent discourse, 2nd Samuel, 3-38, at Santee Church. The deceased was born at Root, Montgomery Co., N. Y., in 1819, When 14 years of age he, with his parents moved to what is now known as West Toledo. He was united in marriage with Maria Wiggins, May 11, 1845. About 1850 they moved to Fulton county, settling on a farm in Royalton township where they resided until the death of his companion in 1880. To this union, 7 children, 4 sons and 3 daughters were born, all of whom, except one son, Bradford, are living. In 1884 he was again united in marriage with Catherine McHenry, and they resided in Lenawee Co., Mich., until her death in 1890. He was converted to God in early life and joined the Methodist Episcopal church. Shortly after, he became a licensed local minister and was an active worker in preaching the gospel and officiating at many funerals. His last work was preaching a funeral sermon for Mrs. Alice Giffrord, just about three days before his sickness. He was a very useful man in the community in which he lived, by helping and assisting his fellow-men. He was loved and esteemed by all. About 14 years ago he was stricken with paralysis, from which he only partially recovered and remained an invalid. During this time he exercised a cheerful disposition and bore his sickness with patience. His life should be an example to us all. He leaves 6 children, 29 grand-children and 6 great-grand-children, and a host of friends who mourn their loss, which is his eternal gain. (Newspaper clipping, From Ethlyn Mizer Finley) NOTES: Santee church was located a couple of miles north of US 20 on CR 7. Per Dot Finley, Samuel is buried in the Jordon cemetery which is on CR RS just east of SR 109, 1/2 mile north of US 20. There is a tombstone near the south east corner of the cemetery. Dot went there once with Valeda Mizer. They started from the west end, unfortnately, looking for Samuel's tombstone. The tombstone was in the 3rd row from the east end. She said that some of the letters were eroding. The tombstone is for his first wife, Frances Maria Wiggins. The tombstone is inscribed: Frances M. Gardinier, May 10, 1880, Ae 54y- 2d, W/o Samuel Gardinier. She was born May 8, 1826. The tombstone is in row 17, counting from the West end of the cemetery or the 3rd row from the east end. Samuel's daughter's last name was Bryan and lived in Swanton. Which is where he died. So pass away the friends we love, Their presence lost in worlds above, While we o'er their slumbers are weeping.
