        WILLIAM LINCOLN HART. As qualifications for the distinction of
being elected president of the Ohio State Bar Association for the years
1923-24, William Lincoln Hart has a record of long and successful practice
at Alliance, and a success not only as an able lawyer but of a broad minded
and public spirited citizen.
        Mr. Hart was born at Inverness in Columbiana County, Ohio, February
6, 1867, son of Benjamin F. and Ariel S. (Dreghorn) Hart. His maternal
grandfather, John Dreghorn, was born in Scotland was a pioneer in the
typically Scotch village of Inverness in Columbiana county. The Hart family
has been been in America since early Colonial times. His great-grandfather,
Silas Hart, was a soldier in the War of the Revolution, while his
grandfather, John S. Hart, served in the War of 1812. John S. Hart became
the father of eight sons and nine daughters, seven of the sons, becoming
soldiers in the Union army during the Civil war, most of them in the three
years' service. All of them returned home. Benjamin F. Hart was born in
Columbiana County in 1843, was a soldier in the Twenty-sixth Ohio Veteran
Volunteer Battery, and spent his mature career as a farmer in the home
locality.
        William Lincoln Hart was the first in a large family of children
and spent his boyhood days on a farm in Columbiana County. He attended
local schools, and at the age of eighteen began teaching in his home
district. He taught for seven years and at the same time paid his expenses
as a student in Mount Union College at Alliance, where he graduated with
the Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1893 he became city editor of the Alliance
Daily Critic, later known as the Alliance Daily Leader, but in 1895,
entered the law Department of the University of Michigan, where he was
graduated Bachelor of Laws with the class of 1897. He was president of the
senior class of 1897. He was president of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity,
and also the Wranglers Club. He was admitted to the bar June 10, 1897,
standing third in a class of ninety applicants. On October 1, 1897, he
opened a law office at Alliance, and in March, 1898, became a partner of
Dennis E. Rogers, with whom he practiced until the death of Mr. Rogers in
January, 1903. Since February, 1903, he has been associated in practice
with Hugo C. Koehler in the firm of Hart & Koehler. This is a partnership
of more than twenty years standing, and is a firm that has handled cases of
great magnitude. The firm specializes in railroad and corporation law. Mr.
Hart was admitted to practice in the Federal courts of the Northern
District of Ohio March 23, 1903.
        Mr Hart is a trustee of Mount Union College, and is lecturer on
international law in that institution. He has prepared a number of articles
for law magazines, and is a member of the American Society of International
Law, the Stark County, State and American Bar associations. During the war
he was a member of the legal advisory board of Stark County.
        Mr. Hart is a member of Conrad Lodge of Masons, Alliance Commanders
No. 67, Knights Templar Lake Erie Consistory of the Scottish Rite and Al
Koran Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Cleveland, and is also affiliated with
the Lone Rock Lodge No. 23, Knights of Pythias. He belongs to the Rotary
Club and the Country Club of Alliance, the Chamber of Commerce, the
Congress Lake Country Club of Alliance, and is a member of the Ohio Society
of Mayflower descendants. He is a member of the Stark County Republican
Executive Committee and he and his wife are members of the First Methodist
Episcopal Church.
        He married September 16, 1897, Miss Ida B. Caskey, daughter of
Nathan and Bertha Caskey. They have two children, Ian Bruce, born December
28, 1899, now a practicing lawyer at Canton, Ohio; and William Lincoln,
Jr., born January 11, 1910.

        WILLIAM S. HART, M.D. While a physician by education and
profession, Doctor Hart, of Pomeroy, Meigs County, is perhaps better known
in that section because of his extended public service as county auditor, a
post of duty in which he served four terms.
        Doctor Hart was born on a a farm in Lodi Township, Athens County,
October 15, 1865, and was an infant when his parents moved to Meigs County.
His father, David Hart, was a native of New Jersey, and his mother, Barbara
(Wetheral) Hart, was born in Pennsylvania. Both had been married before,
and Barbara Wetheral at the time of her marriage to David Hart was the
widow of Robert Shaw. David Hart had fourteen children by his first
marriage and six by his second wife. David Hart spent his active career as
a farmer and during the sixteen years he lived at Pomeroy he was a butcher
and justice of the peace. After leaving Pomeroy he established his home on
a farm in Scipio Township of Meigs County. He was a very prosperous citizen
and active in the United Brethren Church. David Hart died in 1895 at the
age eighty, and his wife, Barbara, passed away aged seventy. The sons of
David Hart by his first marriage were Aaron, Daniel, James, Peter, Philip
and John, and there were two sons of the second marriage: Frank, a farmer,
who died in 1921, and Dr. William S.
        William S. Hart acquired a common school education, and at the age
of seventeen began teaching. He taught through a period of eight years,
using his vacation periods and his earnings to advance his education,
attending the Pageville Academy and the Jerseyville Seminary, and he also
began the study of medicine in Doctor Blakely's office. Besides teaching he
also did farm work as a means toward accumulating the capital needed to put
into medical school. He graduated in March, 1891, from the Columbus Medical
College, and then for about twelve years was engaged in private practice at
Dyesville in Meigs County.
        In 1902 he became deputy auditor of Meigs County, serving in that
capacity until 1908, when he was elected auditor, serving four years, from
1909. During 1914-15 he was assistant to the district assessor, and then
was again elected auditor, holding that office until March, 1923. During a
portion of his term as county auditor the present Governor Donahey was
state auditor. Doctor Hart has always been deeply interested in politics,
attending numerous county and state conventions as a delegate. His chief
business responsibilities at present are as secretary and manager of the
Valley Standard Credit Company.
        Doctor Hart married, on September 2, 1890, Miss Blanche Tewksbury.
Her father is Aaron Tewksbury, a veteran of the Civil war and a member of
the Grand Army of the Republic. Doctor and Mrs. Hart have four children:
Elsa, bookkeeper and cashier for the New York Clothing Company at Pomeroy;
Edna B., wife of H.E. Cooper, an automobile dealer at Pomeroy and
Middleport; Audrey L., wife of Dr. E.F. Maag, of Middleport; and William
L., a student in high school. Doctor Hart is a republican, is past
chancellor commander of the Knights of Pythias, a member of the masonic
order, and is active in the Methodist Episcopal Church, having formerly
been a teacher in the Sunday school.

in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William B.

pneumonia.  The father is manager of the Kroger grocery 
at High street and First avenue.  Besides the parents, 
Mrs. Rosabelle Gildersleeve, grandmother, who also 
resides at the Hamlet street home, survives.  Funeral 
services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock 
Thursday afternoon and the body will be interred in

"In Memoriam

     William Kenneth Gildersleeve, only child of William 
D., and Margaret Calvert Gildersleeve, was born at 866 
Summitt Street, Columbus, Ohio, September 25th, 1919 
and departed this life December 29th, 1924, aged five 
years three months and four days. 
     'Kenny,' as we al called him, was a most lovable 
child, kind, patient and obedient.  Although of tender 
years, his understanding and patience through suffering 
was remarkable.  His sweet disposition, loving smile 
and gentle voice will remain a cherished memory to all 
who knew him.
     God in his infinite wisdom knew that Heaven was not 
complete without our boy, so he took him yonder to be 
with Him.
     He leaves to mourn their loss - mother, father and 
grandmother and a host of other relatives and friends.
     Sleep my little son, sleep,
     Narrow thy bed and deep;
     Hunger nor thirst nor cruel pain,
     Never can harm our babe again.
     Sleep, baby, sleep."
