Henry William FRETTER was born April 19, 1843, in Avon, Lorain county, Ohio. His boyhood days were spent there until the breaking out of the Civil war, when he enlisted in the 103rd Ohio Vol. The well known Gen. Casment was it's Col. - Gen. Jack Casment, as he is familiarly called. Young FRETTER remained in the service through all marches, engagements and vicissitudes of that awful period. He did not receive but one wound. He was mustered out of the service at Raleigh, N.C. He returned to his home county where he lived six years. June 11, 1867, he was united in marriage with Miss Phoebe Minerva RANDALL, Medina Ohio. After four years they removed - he and his young wife - to Michigan, locating near Sturgis, in Burr Oak township, where they have lived ever since, and under the Providence of God built a little home, though not without self denials and toils but a few. Finally the time comes; after all their years of happiness, to separate wife, friends and kindred, and depart to a higher and better state. Just at the hour of 1 o'clock, p.m., on Wednesday, May 22, the Angel of Death came to summons him to leave this earthly realm, which he did in a painless, peaceful spirit, without a struggle. At his bedside were his faithful and devoted wife, kindred, and a few neighbors, to aid if possible in making the sad hour bearable, his wife having been his constant companion and attendant both by day and night for weeks and months. Strong indeed was her love and physical endurance to watch and administer every needed comfort till the last breath was drawn and his eyes closed into that long sleep which knows no waking until the morning of the resurrection. For a number of years his health has been failing - gradually going down under an old army disease and complications, contracted during the Civil war. But on the 5th of March, last, he was taken with unusual weakness; prostration followed until he was helpless, and remained so till the day of his death. The best of medical skill was employed, and even counsel called in order, if possible, to discover if there was a ray of hope to encourage further treatment other than that already being administered. But all this indeed to no avail. The deceased was 64 years, one month and three days old. He leaves a wife to mourn his loss. There were no children. Mr. FRETTER was a quiet, unobtrusive man, honorable in all his dealings. He was a strictly moral man. Too, he was a superior mechanic, and until his health failed he always commanded the highest wages. He was respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place from the family residence on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, under the auspices of Stoughton Post, G.A.R., of Sturgis, of which deceased was a member. The pall bearers were selected by Commander Wilber. Rev. G.E. Pooler of Burr Oak conducted the religious services. A well selected portion of scripture was read and a fervent prayer was offered; then followed his appropriately eloquent address. The singing was rendered by Miss Wilma Urie of Sturgis, fitly and sublimely impressing all present, of the sad event. The remains were borne away from the quiet home by his comrades to the hearse which stood in solumn waiting to bear away the once active soldier, citizen, neighbor and friend, husband and loved one. Many of the friends and kindred were present. Some sent messages of sympathy and love, being too feeble to be present. His remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Oak Lawn cemetery in the city of Sturgis. Departed but not forgotten. Card of Thanks. - For the great kindness of friends, neighbors and the comrades of my late husband, and to those contributing so liberally of flowers, I return sincere thanks. Mrs. H.W.
