She had two brothers, Henry and Jacob, and three sisters. Her father, John Cribbs and his wife came over from Pennsylvania about 1803 with Major Cribbs, John Judy, and Henry and Martin Keller settling in New Philadelphia, Ohio. The Cribbs' home was one of the first twelve or fifteen in New Philadelphia and was located in the vicinity of the intersection of the present streets, Front and South Broadway. Grandmother knew New Philadelphia, when there were few houses there, and Tuscarawas County was practically a wilderness. She watched cows on pasture between New Philadelphia and Dover; saw the County and town develop into thriving communities; and knew practically all of the old settlers; the Kniselys, Judys, Helmicks, Correls, etc. Her mother, Anna Kitch, was the daughter of Marion Kitch and his wife. Little mention is made of them except that Great Grandmother Kitch was very beautiful and was an accomplished singer and sang in the Presbyterian Church. She died when Grandma was quite a little girl and Grandma went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Helmich. She had two brothers and three sisters. Her brother, Great Uncle Tenry (Henry) Cribbs, married and had three sons: Jacob, William, and Charles. Jacob married and moved to Nineveh and reared several boys and girls. William lived in New Philadelphia and had no children. Charles lived at Sharon and had two daughters and two sons. Great Uncle Jacob and his wife lived in a church home at Zelienopel, Pennsylvania. They had no children. Great Aunt Margaret married a Cable and they removed to Iowa. It is believed they had one son and two daughters. Great Aunt Clarissa married Sebastian Shane. To them were born three sons and three daughters: Charles, Milton and John, Ida (Milar), Anna, and Catherine Elizabeth (France). Great Aunt Catherine married Simon Myers (sic) and they were blessed with three sons and one daughter: Charles, Emmet, Allen, and Anna (Charles Shumaker). One son, Henry ("Lank") Dorn, to a former marriage, went west to Iowa, probably with the Cables. Beatrice McGirr, a Granddaughter, relates, 'Even when Grandmother was very infirm, I have taken her up town in a wheel chair and it was wonderful to hear her describe New Philadelphia, as she knew and saw it settled, grow and change into a city. She saw the trails change into paved roads, saw the only mode of travel in her days change from that on horseback to the street cars, canal, trains, and the automobile; lighting from candles to oil lamps and then to electricity; the Pony Express to daily mail delivery by carriers; and gave evidence of her wealth of knowledge acquired by living and learning the hard way in those transition years while rearing a family of eleven children. Despite these years of toil and her age, she was alert and keen in thought and she would describe the completion and operation of the canal, the opening of the vast coal fields of our country, the building of the B & O Railroad which made work the year round possible for the shipment of coal by rail instead of just during the open weather by the Ohio Canal.'" ------------------------------ X-Message: #5 Date: Tue, 9 Feb 1999 20:44:18 -0500 From: jaxdawg@accessclub.com (Mark Rowden) Subject: Isaac and Susanna Hill's 50th Anniversary FIFTIETH MILESTONE OF MARRIED LIFE REACHED BY A PROMINENT COUPLE WHO WERE MARRIED IN NEW PHILADELPHIA, IN 1851 On April 15, 1851 Mr. Isaac Hill and Miss Susan Cribbs were united in marriage in New Philadelphia, by Rev. E. P. Jacobs. Having reached the fiftieth milestone of married life on last Monday, their children had, unknown to them, arranged to celebrate the event in an appropriate manner, and a more complete surprise it would be impossible to conceive. Of thirteen children born to Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Knipe, was absent on this occasion. By 10 o'clock, the children, grand-children, Mrs. Hill's sisters, Mrs. S. Shane and Mrs. S. A. Myer, together with their husbands and a few invited friends had arrived and taken possession of the house, each bringing baskets filled with dainties to satisfy the inner man. The "Great and Only" genial, jolly, whole-souled Doc McKenzie was present with the "Fun Maker" to amuse and entertain the children, and our observation has led us to the conclusion that men and women were only overgrown children and love to be amused also. When at last Dinner was announced, the person having charge had so arranged that Mrs. Knipe's place should be vacant. Immediately after dinner, and while yet seated at table, the various presents, consisting of a fine gold watch for Mr. Hill and gold glasses and pin for Mrs. Hill; an elegant dresser and many other useful and valuable presents, were presented to them by Curtis L., the oldest son, in a neat speech. Mr. & Mrs. Hill were both born in this county and have lived here all their lives the greater portion of this time in Goshen township. Mr. Hill is the only surviving member of his father's family while Mrs. Hill has two sisters and a brother living, a sister and a brother dead. And right here let me record a queer coincidence: Of the Cribbs family of six children, the two eldest are dead; the two middle have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; (Mr. & Mrs. S. A. Myer having celebrated theirs 13 months ago) while the two younger have celebrated their 25th anniversary, the youngest child, Mrs. Shane, having attended both golden weddings. There were present ten children and 19 grandchildren, while one child, nine grand-children and one great grandchild were unavoidably absent. To the untiring labors of Mrs. Kate Duncan was due the success of this celebration, and all unite in thanking her for the many pleasant memories revived and our good time generally. ------------------------------ X-Message: #6 Date: Tue, 9 Feb 1999 21:11:57 -0500 From: Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman Subject: FAMILY BIBLE RECORD ------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 9-Feb-99 18:26 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Name: KEIST/KISTE Where: Muskingum/Coshocton Counties Ohio ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`` Philip KEIST was born in the year 1764 Nancy KEIST was born January 12th 1788 Thomas SKILES was born January 9th 1797 Sarah KEIST was born February 14th 1799 John KEIST was born December 1st 1800 Catharine KEIST was born January 25th 1803 Joseph KEIST was born April 3rd 1806 Nathan KEIST was born July 22 1809 Samuel KEIST was born May 4th 1812 Nancy KEIST was born January 25th 1815 Malinda KEIST was born September 20th 1817 Lucinda KEIST was born November 4th 1819 Manda KEIST was born March 8th 1822 Matilda KEIST was born May 28th 1824 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ submitted by: Barbara Keist McClenny bmcclenny@wcn.net -------------------------------- End of OH-FOOTSTEPS-D Digest V99 Issue #87 ******************************************
