Civil War Vet Dead Charles Rhodes of Spencerville Died at Fort Wayne Charles A. Rhoades, 79 years of age died Sunday morning at a Fort Wayne hospital of complicated diseases. Mr. Rhoades had been failing in health for some time and about a week ago was taken to the hospital. Charles A. Rhodes the only child of Mathias and Clestia A. Rhodes was born in Akron, Ohio, October 30, 1843, and departed this life at the Methodist Hospital at Fort Wayne, June 17, 1923, aged 79 years 7 months and 17 days. When a young man he came to this country with his parents and located on a farm on the Allen and DeKalb County line southwest of Spencerville, where he spent most of his days in farming. The deceased was a pioneer setties, a worker in his community and an intensely patriotic American citizen and soldier, who loved his country and offered his life as a sacrifice on the alter of liberty when the nation was tottering. As a pioneer settler he was not the first but nevertheless at the time of his coming the country was one of vast forest, swamps, and ponds with few churches, schools and roads. He courageously did his part in helping to change it into the beautiful country we know today. As a soldier he served his country in freedom's cause as a volunteer in Co. G. of the 74th Ohio Regiment of Infantry from October 26, 1861 until October 3, 1862. Being wounded and disabled he was sent to the hospital at Columbus, Ohio, where he recieved an honorable discharge. His love for the old flag under which he faught never diminished and one of the pleasing sights to him was to see Old Glory floating in the free American air. Mr. Rhodes was also a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 556 of Spencerville, to which order he faithfully contended. His first marriage was to Katie Bowman. This marriage was blessed with three children, Frank Rhodes of Akron, Ohio, and Rufus and William who died in childhood. The death summons called his first companion to the Spirit world. In 1877 he again was united in marriage to Aroline Burley and to this union were born three children, Metta Furnish who resides on the old homestead, Burnette Rhodes of Concord, Indiana, and Lori Newman, deceased. The deceased leaves to morn their loss a wife, three children, nine grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 o'clock P.M. from the home, Rev. F.E. Brewster officiating. Burial at White City Cemetery, E.R. Kinsey funeral director. ------------------------------ X-Message: #2 Date: Fri, 1 Jan 1999 15:41:04 -0500 From: "S. K.
