Arkansas City, Cowley Co., KS Mrs. Mary A. SHUPE died Monday evening, January 18, 1904, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. N. J. BIGGS, (I think it's Norville), in West Bolton and the funeral services will be held at Mt. Zion church, at 11 a.m. January 20, 1904, with burial in Mercer cemetery. The deceased was 88 years of age and the mother of David Shupe and Mrs. Bills, of West Bolton Township, and Mrs. Will Downing, of this city. The TRAVELER extends its sympathy to the bereaved family. (Feb 4) OBITUARY Mary A. Van Hise, daughter of James and Nancy Van Hise was born on March 9, 1816 in Fairfield County, Ohio. At an early age she was converted and united with the Lutheran church, of which she remained a member until 1856. At the age of eithteen she was united in wedlock to Geo. Shupe, with whom she lived happily until 1882 when her husband was called to the home above. In 1886 (paper worn, 1856 is date) she with her husband and family removed to Pulaski, Ill (Mt Pulaski, Logan Co, IL) where they remained until 1882 when after the death of her husband she removed to Kansas, where she has been residing with her children since. She was the mother of four children, three daughters and one son, all of whom are living. Two daughters, Mrs. Arthella Downing and Mrs. Nancy Biggs and the son, David Shupe were with her and cared for her tenderly during her last illness. The other daughter, Mrs. Josephine Laughlin, who resides at Butte, Montana, was unable to be present. She also leaves to mourn her loss fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great grand children. In 1851 (1857?) she united by letter with the United Brethern church of which she has since remained a faithful and consistent member. She died January 18, 1904, at the age of 87 years 10 months 9 days. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Hudleson at Mt. Zion M.E. church with burial in Hope cemetery. The floral offerings were beautiful. (To the best of my knowledge, "Will Downing" was Silas William Downing. And for N. J. Biggs, on one census I found a Norville, all the rest just initials.) My grandmother was one of the grandchildren, and my mother a great grand child.
