The second one isn't dated, but entries were made in my GGGrandfather Levi Ely's writing. I know it is his because of the diaries I have that were his. Then the writing changes to my GGrandfather Karl Ely and then to my GGrandmother Louise (Morlock)Ely's. I have left the punctuation as is. If you need to edit, go ahead as long as the content will be in tact. Also the mistakes on name spelling, ie Carl and Karl are both the same person. If you will permit me, I will also transcribe the first part of the 1856 diary that tells the history that links to Knox Co. L. Levi Elys diary for 1856 Bought at West Unity Williams County Ohio, Friday, April 25th/56 Price 31cts I design keeping and history of my life commencing May 20th at which time I am twenty one years of age. Levi Ely, Son of Wm and Sarah Ely was born May 20th 1835, in Franklin Township Knox Co. Ohio In 1842 we moved to Richland County, O. Rented a farm on a small stream called "Lost Run" Lived there three years. About the time Father went to Williams Co. in search of a location but did not buy at that time After returning home, he purchased a farm in Bloomfield Township. Morrow Co. O. One mile west of a small town called Sparta. Containing 57 acres to which we moved on the 1st day of April 1845. And as I can reccollect peach trees were in full bloom Here our privelege of hearing the Gospel was good, In Sparta there was a Methodist Church which we often attended. Father and Mother were Presbyterians, Their nearest place of preaching was at Chesterville, it being six miles distant. at this time I often thought of my soul, but I gave but little heed to my eternal interests. While liveing at "Lost Run"(as I should have mentioned before)Joanna(my oldest sister)experienced religion, and Joined the Methodist Church, she being fourteen years of age at that time. After we moved to Bloomfield. I and my oldest brother did the principal part of the farming, while Father being a carpenter, worked at his trade during the summer seasons, consequently was not at home much of the time. While living here our chance for schooling was very good. Schoolhouse being one mile distant made it just a good tramp for youg lads like we were at that time. Here I went to school every winter and sometimes in the summer. And as I was naturally a little mischievous I did not make that advancement in the sciences which I might have made had I been more dilligent, However I got along tolerably well. In the fall of 1848, Father sold his farm in Bloomfield, and started again for Williams County in view of a location where he also purchased an eighty-acre lot, for which he gave $825,00, of Mr. Hiram Hadley, He then returned home and stayed there during the winterm, In the spring, he and my oldest brother went again to Williams Co, with a load of goods to put in the spring crop. After they returned home we then prepared for moving. It is now dark I must quit, May 23rd 1856 Aug 4th, I continue a brief sketch of my former history. After having prepared for moving, my oldest sister was married to Stilley Huffman, on the 3rd day of June A.D./49, and stayed at Bloomfield. We then started on our journey, on Monday the 4th of June /49, and safely arrived at our new home in Williams Co, on the 10th, I walked some of the time and helped drive the cattle, which we brought with us, After we got here we commenced choping and clearing up the farm and in about three years, we got all cleared that we wished to. Our crops came in good, and we got along tolerably well, In the spring of /52 my brother in law Stilley Huffman moved to this county and rented a farm for one year, and then bought, We all had our health very good, with a very few exceptions. At this point, the diary starts, as he said, on Tuesday, May 20th 1856 I hope this is what you wanted, sorry it took me so long, had out of state company for the weekend. Anything else you want or need, I will do my best. I need to know more about sending pictures on internet, I just am getting to know the scanner. Pictures of Levi and Sarah Ely and two of their children are in the newer Bible and I have them scanned, if you want, I'll try to learn, quickly -- lol Sue Hart ------------------------------ X-Message: #2 Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 20:12:35 -0500 From: "S.
