Church in this town after the tombstones were removed from this cemetery. It is near the junction of State Roads 9 and 519. The plaque contains the names of some who are buried there and only gives the date of death. Many of the original old tombstones are stacked in a back corner of the churchyard. Since they were heaped on top of each other it was impossible for me to read many of them. Many of these tombstones were unusually nice ones and many have been broken. If interested in any of the following names as given on the memorial it would be well to investigate while these stones are still available. If the complete inscriptions of these stones are not available anywhere, it would be a fine project to have all the inscriptions from the stack copied. It was in a spirit of sadness I copied these names, wondering why the resting places with their memorial of these brave Ohio pioneers could not have been preserved in this town. Another very large old pioneer Harrison County cemetery where the tombstones have been removed is the one at Cadiz, just north of New Athens. It had contained about 500 burials. Some of the tombstones were used to build walls, walks, and a building. Some bodies were said to have been removed to the new cemetery. The approach to other cemeteries in this vicinity is hazardous because of the havoc being wrought here by coal strip mining.
