WILKINS, July 6, 1821, east? half of Lot 15. Wit: mIller MOZIER and Enos MILES. (see below) Gabriel WILKINS from S.H. SMITH, Lots 16 and 22 and Mtg. to Smith. Lot 26 by a Deed from S.H. SMITH bearing date March 26, 1821, was conveyed to the child which the widow SIMPKINS (alias the widow Ash?) had by S.H. SMITH. This deed was shown to me by the widow soon after its execution, it was witnessed by Alfred MANNING, a Justice of the Peace and Thomas SMITH, on the 30th of March. This deed was not recorded until after the death of Elisha WEBSTER, who had married the widow and was her husband at the date of said deed. Webster died during the Spring of 182 and on the 19th of October, 1922, the said widow (Webster) called at the recording office with the deed to be recorded. She then mentioned to me that since Websters death (using the plural number) we have altered the deed so that it now conveys the land to myself instead of my child. The child's name which I think was maria SIMPKINS had then been scratched out and the name of Eliza WEbster inserted in S.H. SMITH's handwriting. N.B. WEBSTER and his wife had separated previous to the execution of the deed and continued so until his death. The deed was accordingly recorded. N.B. the widow afterwards signed and had recorded an explanation which may be seen in Book E K R. LOT 15. At the Spring muster held at Benj. CORWINS in 1822 Gabriel WILKINS ordered Wm. K. WILKINS out of the ranks because he was not yet 18 years old and he went out accordingly. This was noticed by Anson PROUTY. It was in Capt. David SHAW's Company. John TALMAGE, the supervisor of the Township in which this lot lies; and in the summer of 1824? William got cleared of working on the road because he was not of age. SMITH. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- LETTER BY JONATHAN HUNT, FEBRUARY 18, 1850 I came to my residence in Pleasant Township, Knox County, Ohio, in 1806 - November 5th of that year. Ours was the first 5 horse wagon that came through from Newark. At that time old Peter DOTY was living near our place. He had arrived the Spring previously and so did Jonathan BAILES?. They are since deceased. John LASH, Joseph CONNARD?, and Nathan CONARD and James DUNLAP had settled in what is now Morgan Township in 1804. Old Ziba LEONARD and Abner BROWN were living near the south boundary of Clinton Township. They also had settled there in 1804. Henry HANES? and John MILLS had also settled south of Mt. Vernon in Clinton Township about the same date. Also Ebenezer BROWN had settled, I think as early as 1804 on the farm now occupied and owned by John BEAM?, a little south of Mt. Vernon and I think he had built a kind of log cabin mill on the run at Little ____?, the small creek from where John BROWN? ______resides. It think the mill was a cabin about 12 by 16 feet, wooden running gears?, small _____ head mill stones. It think not over 2 feet and 12 inches across. The whole _____ was very rough. This was the only grist mill in the County except one at Frederick, a log mill built by John KEER (KERR?). There was a log school house and well, on what is now the public square in Mt. Vernon. There was considerable brush and timber even on the public square in 1806. I assisted to clear off the timber from the Square and lower part of Main Street, a short time before the commissioners came to fix the County Seat. Our object was that they might see the general face of the site for the town. I worked 4 days with others at it. In 1806 when I came out, Andrew CRAIG lived down near Centre Run at an old Indian field, on the north side of ____ river. The persons then living in cabins on what is now Mt. Vernon were: Mr. PATTERSON - proprietor Joseph WALKER - proprietor Benj. BUTLER - proprietor James WALKER James CRAIG Old Mr. KILE Peter KILE Nicholas KILE Jesse SEVER Old Mr. HUMPHREY Alex. WALKER Enoch HARRIS - colored man. There occurred in the summer of 1807, a powerful windstorm which passed over what is now Mt. Vernon and sweeped? down and prostrated? most all the timber standing except the smaller brush. Jonathan Hunt (The above was copied from the original faded letter and some words were difficult to read. "Conard" likely Conrad.) FROM GRAHAM'S HISTORY OF KNOX COUNTY: Jonathan Hunt, born in Somerset Co., N.J., October 23, 1780, married Honor WElls of West Virginia, and moved to Knox County, Ohio in 1806. In company with his father, Jonathan Hunt, Sr. He located in what is now Pleasant Township. Hunt's Station perpetuates his memory. -------------------------------- End of OH-FOOTSTEPS-D Digest V99 Issue #475 *******************************************
