was spent in the constant exercise of domestic and Christian virtue.

              BIRTH RECORDS OF PORTAGE COUNTY, OHIO FOR 1856-1957

        Four Portage County township assessor's records of births for the
year ending March 1, 1857 have survived and are now deposited at Kent State
University Library, Kent, Ohio. Richard E. Willson has transcribed and
compiled the eighty-one births gathered by the assessors of Atwater,
Deerfield, Paris and Randolph townships in hopes of providing a partial
birth record for Portage County, Ohio for 1856-1857. The original
assessor's township reports contain the following information: date of
birth; name of child, if given; sex; color; whether born alive or dead;
name of father and maiden name of mother; and their residence. An
abbreviation for the source of each birth is cited and these sources are
given following the list of births.
