Zimmerman at Gnadenhutten, Ohio 1955 May 1816 The 24th: Since the river was already much swollen by the heavy rainfalls, we dared not attempt to make the return trip through Goshen; as the low lands were already flooded there, we were taken across at New Philadelphia and took our way across the hills and adjoining Mr. Schwartz, and toward evening we arrived home again, safe and sound. The 28th: The baptism of little Abraham Romig, son of our Bro. Abraham and Sr. Hanah Romig, took place in the home of the parents, since the child is very sick. June 1816 Sunday, the second: The son of Bro. and Sr. John Romig, named Edward, was baptised into the death of Jesus. The third: At Sharon, on Whitmonday, there occurred the marriage of the widowed brother H. Keller, to the single sister, M. R. Fredrich. Sunday, the ninth: Little Sarah Anna Knaus was baptised into the death of Jesus. The married sister Maria Tschudy, was received into the Brethren's Church. The married Br. and Sr. Christian and Elizabeth Espich shared for the first time in this great blessing of the congregation, at which the married brother, Jacob Kniester was present as a candidate. August 1816 Sunday, the eighth: The little daughter of Jacob and Maria Winsch, named Catherine, was baptised. The twentieth: We visited sick people on the Beersheba side. The twenty second: Moth Guenther became seriously sick here in Gnadenhutten, but indeed, she recovered by the twenty-fourth so that we hope for her recovery. Sunday, the twenty fifth: Due to the heavy downpour of rain, preaching at Beershwas omitted. The twenty seventh we visited with sick people on the Beersheba side. The twenty ninth: We went by wagon to New Philadelphia where the little daughter of Bro. and Sr. Ricksecker, her name Maria Anna, was baptised. A number of our young people there had the measels, but were all on the road to improvement. In the evening after a brief stop with Bro. and Sr. Luckenbach in Goshen, we drove as far as Bro. and Sr. Blickensdoerfer, senior, where we stopped for the night. September 1816 Sunday, the first: At two o'clock there was a gathering for the purpose of adult baptism namely, of the grown daughter of Lewis Blickensderfer. She received the name Anna Susanna. For this transaction we were obliged to seek out a large room in the dwelling of Bro. and Sr. John Blickensderfer, since for both services, the schoolhouse was far too small to hold all in attendance. The seventh: The twin children of Cornelius and Elizabeth O'Donald were baptised into the death of Jesus. the little son with the name Elijah, and the daughter, Elijah, and the daughter, Elissa. The unmarried Martin Tschudy was received into the Brethren's Church. The burial of the little child Elijah O'Donald occured in Beersheba. The funeral sermon was held in the house of Mr. Carl O'Donald. Sunday, the fifteenth: The single brother, William Blickensderfer, from Lititz, arrived here on the tthirteenth to visit with his friends. The single brother, Kefer, had come with him. The twenty fourth: The married Keiser arrived from Switzerland, from the Canton of Basel, coming to his relatives in this area. October 1816 Sunday, the sixth: Two little children were baptised, namely, William Taylor and Cynthis Jerushah Edmonds. The tenth: Jacob Espich was married to Catherine Tarr, in John Blick's house. The eleventh: The older girl Maria Peter, traveled with Casper Werner from here to Bethlehem to stay. Likewise on the sixth, the unmarried brother, William Blickensderfer, left here for Lititz. Also this week the married Fabritz with his family came from Maryland to remain in this vicinity. The thirteenth: We baptised the unmarried Barbara Margaretha Freiedrick at one o'clock. Sunday, the seventeenth:We again had an adult baptism in Gnadenhutten, namely the single John Abraham Blickensderfer. The twenty fifth: The burial of a child occurred here in Gnadenhutten, namely a little son of John George, and Sarah Rebstock, born on the seventeenth of this month; and on the twenty second it please the Good Shepherd to receive this lambkin into his eternal safeguard after a brief illness. December 1816 Eleven children were born and baptised in the course of the year 1816, in Gnadenhutten, Beersheba and Sharon, namely: baby boys: Thomas Kniester, Jacob Blickensderfer, Abraham Romig,Edward Romig, and Gottfried Dell; and the baby girls: Mathilde Walton, Maria Friedrich; (These were born toward the close of the previous year, but were not baptised until this year.) Since the end of December, they remained living with with G. Werner, who brought them along from Lititz. Ssunday, the twenty third: We had severe snow storms, so that none from away from here were present at the worship service in Gnadenhutten. Since we had much rain and bad weather this week, the ice on the Muskingum broke and went down without damage; but as it evidently dammed the river somewhere below, and the water rose to such a height that on March 1817 Sunday, March the second, the Muskingum could not be crossed and on this day the meeting at Beersheba had to drop out. The sixth: The ice above Gnadenhutten broke: a greater flow of ice arose than the first, however one did not hear of any considerable damage which resulted except probably 4 boats that went with the ice. Our people began the sugar cooking this week, but in this the larger part of our brethren and sisters in Gnadenhutten and on the Beersheba side were hindered by the epidemic of measles, as in most homes, some of the grown folks, together with children, were lying ill.
