Zimmerman at Gnadenhutten, Ohio 1955 January 1821 The first: In the afternoon Brother Rauschenberger again went to Sharon and on the second he conducted the funeral of the child Anne Dienst who died on December 31 of the previous year. The third: Brother Rauschenberger visited a widow, named Kram, near Gnadenhutten and found her with her family in a wretched situation; that is, all of her five children wre down with sickness. These conditions and the accumulated tasks of the mother in caring for the sick resulted in such a state of weakness that she was incapable of waiting on the sick any longer. For this reason the brethren in Gnadenhutten went there by turns at night and cared for the sick. But as Brother Rauschenberger, on a second visit, on the fifth, found the condition of the woman to be very serious, and the sick were not at all better, he asked a grownup son and daughter of Brother Rank to go there and to take over the work of nurturing the sick; they were quite willing to do so. The mother was then brought to her step-son to get the benefit of more rest, as she took very little notice of her children. Sunday, the seventh: The burial of Brother Martin Tschudy, who blessedly fell asleep in Gnadenhutten on the fifth, occurred here today. As a deep snow had fallen the day before, a large number of people came together by sled. The eighth: As the widow Kram had so far recovered this week that she was again able to take care of her children, so at the end of the week the young Ranks again returned home. But for some time, some of the brethren and sisters from the town and neighborhood kept watch over the sick at night.
