        FIRST RECORDS OF THE STEUBENVILLE LAND OFFICE
                        NORTHWEST TERRITORY

The basic operating unit to transfer title of land in the public domain is
the district land office. The first district land office was opened at
Steubenville (Ohio) on July 2, 1800. The following records were copied from
that office and were for lands in the Northwest Territory - the area now
northeastern Ohio. This land was in Columbiana County, Ohio and some in
Stark County, Ohio.

The information most important to the genealogist in these records is the
place of residence of the applicant. Unfortunately this data was not always
given. Many of these persons had more than one entry, but for brevity in
this record a name will only appear once and the number of acres and
location will not be given. It does not necessarily follow that these
persons settled on this land, as some were land speculators.

These records were copied and contributed by Mrs. Bert Harter, Doylestown,
Ohio. They were copied from the files in Washington, D.C., July 1961, as
her project for the Eleventh Institute of Genealogical Research.

                The first page is entitled as follows:

"Account of public lands applied for by Individuals to David Hoge, Register
of the Land Office at Steubenville, shewing those tracts for which the
payments of one fourth part of the purchase money has been made, and those
which have reverted to the United States on failure of said payment."

This cemetery is at the edge of Mt Pleasant a bit off Rt 647 and is well
kept due to a generous endowment.  This is one page of the people buried
