Pre-empted lands were those secured by right of preference, or to secure beforehand, in the purchase of public lands. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMMES PURCHASE The Symmes purchase in 1794 covered what is now most of Hamilton county, to the Ohio River, including present site of Cincinnati, and the southeast corner of now Butler county and the southwest corner of now Warren county. Judge John Cleves Symmes paid sixty-seven cents an acre. The tract consisted of three hundred and eleven thousand, six hundred and eighty-two acres of land between the Great and Little Miami Rivers, int he southwestern section of the State. It borders ont he Ohio River for a distance of twenty-seven miles. Every 16th section in each township was reserved by Congress for use of schools. One six mile square township was granted for college purposes. Miami University at Oxford is the result of this agreement. Congress reserved fifteen acres around Fort Washington in Cincinnati. Judge Symmes of New Jersey contributed much in support of the Continental army under Washington. For this he received certificates of indebtedness. in 1787 he petitioned Congress to use these certificates for the purchase of Congress land. The contract was made in 1788 and patent given September 13th, 1794.
