Hildreth, M.D., 1854 BARKER, Joseph - A native of New Market, Rockingham Co., N.H., born Sept. 9, 1765, son of Ephriam & Mary (Manning) Barker. His mother from Ipswich, Mass. Joseph married Elizabeth Dana. BRADFORD, Robert - Born Plymouth, Mass. 1750, descendant of Gov. Bradford. He married Kezia Little, daughter of Capt. Nath'l Little. BROWN, Benjamin - Born Oct. 17, 1745 in Leicester, Mass., son of Capt. John & Elizabeth (Jones) Brown. He married Jean Thomas. BLENNERHASSETT, Harman & Margaret - Harman born 1767 in Hampshire, England, descendant of a noble family of Ireland. He married Miss Agnew, daughter of governor of Isle of Mann and grand-daughter of Gen. Agnew, who fell at battle of Germantown. BATTELLE, Ebenezer (Col.) - Son of Ebenezer Battelle, Esq. of Dedham, Mass. He married Anna Darant, the daughter of Cornelius Darant, Esq., a rich merchant of Boston. They had 4 children. CUSHING, Nathaniel - Born April 8, 1753 in Pembrook, Mass. was a branch of the illustrious Cushing family of Boston. He married Elizabeth Heath and had twelve children. Both died in 1814. CUTLER, Maj. Jervis - Born 1768, Edgarton, on Martha's Vineyard, son of Rev. Manassch Cutler, many years pastor in Hamilton, Mass. He married Philadelphia Cargill at Killingly, Conn. where his brother Ephriam Cutler lived. She died 1822 and he married 2nd Mrs. Eliza Chandler of Evansville, Ind. He died 1844. DANA, William - Born 1745, Brighton, Mass (then Little Cambridge). The progenitor of the Danas was a French Huguenot who fled to England. William has brothers Jonathan, Samuel, Benjamin, Josiah and Ezra and three sisters. he married Miss Mary Bancroft, the daughter of Esq. Bancroft, of Peperil, Mass. DEVOL, Jonathan - Born 1756, Tiverton, R.I. of French descent. His mother was a Quaker. He was youngest of seven sons. He married in 1776, Miss Nancy Barker, daughter of Capt. Isaac Barker a noted ship-master of Newport. They had 13 children. FEARING, Paul - Born Feb. 28, 1762 in Wareham, Mass., son of Noah & Mary Fearing, who had another son and daughter. Daughter Lucy married Mr. Wyllis, atty. Paul married Miss Cynthia Rouse, 1795 at Marietta, Ohio. She had a sister Betsy who came to Ohio with her. Paul and Cynthia had 3 children. GILMAN, Joseph & Rebecca - Born 1736 in Exeter, N.H., the 3rd generation of the descendants of John Gilman, from Norfolk, England in 1637. He married Rebecca Ives, granddaughter of the Hon. Robert Hale of Beverly, Mass., and daughter of Benjamin & Elizabeth (Hale) Ives. Joseph died 1806 age 70. Rebecca lived at Marietta, Ohio surrounded by grandchildren until 1812, she moved with son to Philadelphia where she died 1820. GILMAN, Benjamin - Born Exeter, N.H. 1765. He moved to Marietta, Ohio 1789 with parents. Returned to New England 1790 and married Hannah Robbins, daughter of Rev. Chandler Robbins, pastor of first church in Plymouth, and went back to Marietta. Hannah had brothers, Rev. Samuel Prince Robbins and Peter Gilman Robbins. Hannah died in New York after death of her husband. GOODALE, Nathan - Born 1743 in Brookfield, Mass. His father died when he was quite young and his mother married Mr. Ware of Rutland. Nathan married Elizabeth Phelps of Rutland on Sept. 11, 1765. About 1770 he moved to Brookfield. Three oldest children were born in Rutland. He went to Ohio 1788, with other families from Mass. Nathan died 1793 after being captured by Indians. He had moved his family to Belpre in 1789. GRAY, William - Born Mar. 1761 in Lynn, Mass., Rev. War soldier 1778, age 17. He was nephew of William Gray, rich merchant of Salem. He married Miss Mary Diamond of Salem. He joined the Ohio Co. 1787, and his family joined him in 1790. Had 10 children. GREENE, Griffin Esq. - Born Feb. 20, 1749 in Warwick, R.I., cousin of Gen. Nathaniel Greene and were Quakers until they entered the army. He married Miss Sarah Greene (no relation) a sister of Col. Christopher Greene. They had 4 children, Richard, Philip, Griffin and Susan. Descendants of Richard in Ohio. HASKELL, Jonathan - Born mar. 17?5 in Rochester, Mass. He entered the army 1779. He married a relative of Griffin Greene, Esq. He died at Belpre, Ohio December 1814. Descendants in Washington County, Ohio. KERR, Hamilton - Born in Philadelphia, son of Matthew Kerr, of Scotch descent, from northern Ireland, to America before the Rev. War. After the war he removed from Philadelphia to near Pittsburgh, then to Wheeling and 1787 to an island just above the mouth of the Muskingum. Here Hamilton became a famous hunter and companion of Lewis Wetzel. At the end of the war he married Susannah Nighswonger, the daughter of Col. John Nighswonger, one of the heroes of the battle of Point Pleasant. She was very well educated. Hamilton was born 1764, making him 20 years old when wounded by the Indians at the mouth of Leading Creek. He left a large family of descendants who live in Meigs and Gallia Counties, Ohio. LAKE, Mrs. Mary - Born 1742, a native of Bristol, England. Her maiden name was Mary Bird. Her father was a silk-weaver. About 1762 she married Archibald Lake, a sea-faring man and moved to St. Johns, Newfoundland, then to New York. In 1789 they moved to Marietta, Ohio with their 8 children. Three of their sons were, James, Thomas and Andrew. After the war in 1795 Mrs. Mary Lake moved with the family 8 miles up the Muskingum. She died 1802, aged 60 years. MEIGS, Return Jonathan - Born Dec. 1740 at Middletown, Conn. He was a colonel in the Rev. War. He landed at Marietta with the Ohio Company 1788 as a surveyor. By his 1st wife he had 2 sons, Return Jonathan (Ohio Governor) and John. Timothy was the son of the second wife, and accompanied his father to Georgia 1801 who was appointed agent among the Cherokees, where he resided until his death Jan. 1823, age 83. OLIVER, Robert - Born 1738 in vicinity of Boston. His parents from north of Ireland and came to Barre, Mass when Robert was quite young. About the year 1775, he married Miss Molly Walker by whom he had a large family. He was a colonel in Rev. War. They lived for a while at Conway, Mass., then he moved his family to Marietta, Ohio in 1788, where he was united with many friends. He died May 1810, age 72. PARSONS, Samuel Holden - Born may 14, 1737, at Lyme, Conn., the third son of Rev. Jonathan parsons, who removed from Lyme to Newburyport, Mass. 1746. His mother was the sister of Gov. Matthew Griswold, of Lyme, lineally descended from Henry Wolcot of Windsor. He was a Major Gen. in Rev. War. In 1787 he was appointed judge of Northwest Territory. While returning to his home in Marietta, Nov. 17, 1789 he was drowned in Big Beaver at the age of 52 years. PUTNAM, Aaron Waldo - Born Apr. 18, 1767 in Pomfret, Conn., second son of Col. Israel Putnam, came to Marietta with his father 1788. He married here Bathsheba Loring and had 6 children. He and Bathsheba died in the fatal epidemic of 1822. PUTNAM, Col. Israel - Born 1739 in Salem, Mass. eldest son of Gen. Israel Putnam of Pomfret, Conn. He mrried Sarah Waldo of Pomfret 1764. In 1775 entered in service of Rev. War. He had 8 children. He joined the Ohio Co. 1789 and brought his family to Marietta in 1790. His children were Israel, Aaron Waldo, David, Wm. Pitt, George Wash., Sarah (wife of Samuel Thornley), Mary (wife of Daniel Mayo) and Elizabeth (wife of Joel Craig). Hildreth, M.D., 1854 PUTNAM, Gen. Rufus - Descendant in the fifth generation from John Putnam who emigrated from Buckinghamshire, England to Salem, Mass., 1634, and brought with him his 3 sons; Thomas, Nathaniel and John. Edward, the son of Thomas was the grandfather of Gen. Rufus. His grandmother was Mary Hall. His father was Elisha Putnam born in Salem, Mass., 1685, and mother Susannah Fuller, daughter of Jonathan Fuller of Danvers. Their youngest son Rufus (above) was born April 9, 1738 at Sutton. Elisha died 1745 and Rufus then lived with grandparents until his mother married 2nd. Capt. John Sadler of Upton, Mass. who died 1753. Then Rufus lived with his brother-in-law Jonathan Dudley. Later he gave many years for service of his country. In April 1761, he married 1st. Elizabeth Ayers, daughter of Wm. Ayers, Esq. of Brookfield. He married 2nd January, 1765 Persis Rice, daughter of Zebulon Rice of Westborough, Mass. and raised a family. In 1890 he moved his family to Marietta, Ohio consisting of wife, 2 sons, 6 daughters and 2 grandchildren. He died 1824. SPROAT, Ebenezer - Born 1752 in Middleborough, Mass. son of Col. Eben. Sproat, a colonel in the Militia. He was a surveyor for the Ohio Co. 1789. At the close of the Rev. War he had married Catherine Whipple, daughter of Com. Abraham Whipple of Providence and Cranston. His wife and daughter arrived in Marietta with Com. Whipple in 1789. The daughter later married Solomon Sibley, Esq. of Detroit and Marietta. Ebenezer (above) also was a Colonel. STORY, Rev. Daniel - Born in Boston 1755. He was an uncle of Judge Story of Cambridge, Mass. Rev. Daniel went to Marietta 1789. STONE, Jonathan - Born in 1751 in Braintree, Mass., son of Francis Stone, who died as a soldier under Gen. Wolfe at Quebec. Jonathan was then bound to his brother Francis. He was a captain in the service of his country 1775. He married 1776 Susannah Mathews of New Braintree, a daughter of Daniel Mathews and her mother a sister of Gen. Rufus Putnam. He moved his family to Marietta in 1788. He died May, 1810. STACEY, William - Was a native of Mass., a colonel in Rev. War and went early to the Northwest Territory, Washington Co., Ohio. In 1789 he moved his family, consisting of wife, 5 sons and son-in-law with families to Marietta. Sons John and Philemon were killed and youngest son Gideon went to New Orleans. After death of 1st wife Col. Stacy married Mrs. Sheffield, a widow from R.I. She was the mother of wife of Maj. Zeigler, Chas. Green and Isaac Pierce. He died 1804. TYLER, Dean - A native of Haverhill, Mass. He joined the Ohio Company 1789, lived Waterford. He never married. TUPPER, Benjamin - Born in 1738 at Staughton, Mass (now Sharon). His father died when he was quite young and left 7 sons and 1 daughter. His brothers were, Mayhew (1.N.Y.), Levi, Seth, Simeon (1.Vt.), Reuben (d. at Sharon), Judah (went to Marietta and died 1793), sister Joanna (married Benj. Estie of Staughton). Benjamin was general in Rev. War. He married at Easton in 1762 Huldah White. She died near Marietta, Ohio Feb. 21, 1812, 20 years after her husband's death. They had 3 sons and 4 daughters; Anselm, Edward White, Benjamin, Rosoma (m. Nath'l Willys of Conn. & Mass., died 1789), Minerva (m. Col. Ichabod Nye, died Marietta 1790), other daughter died young. Maj. Anselm died Marietta 1808, Col. Benj. died Putnam, Ohio 1815, Gen. Edward died Gallipolis 1823. TRUE, Jabez - Born 1760 in Hampstead, N.H., son of Rev. Henry True, a native of Salisbury, Mass. Rev. Henry was a chaplain in French war. Dr. Jabez followed the migration to Marietta 1788. Later he married Mrs. Mills, widow of Capt. Wm. Mills in 1806. He died 1823 of the prevailing epidemic. No children. VARNUM, Hon. James Mitchell - Born 1749, in Dracut, Mass., son of Samuel who had 4 sons, Samuel (died 1822 on family estate). The father was the son of Joseph who left large estates to his sons Joseph & Samuel. The father of Joseph was Samuel who emigrated from Wales to Boston before 1660, lived Ipswich then 1664 Dracut. James M. was a general in Rev. War. He married Martha Childe, daughter of Cromwell Childe of Warren, R.I., who died at Bristol in 1837. James M. died in Marietta Jan. 10, 1789. WHIPPLE, Abraham - Born Providence, R.I. 1733, descendant of John Whipple one of first settlers of Providence. Capt. Abraham gave many years active service for his country. After the war he emigrated to Marietta, Ohio with wife and son and daughter. Catherine who had married Col. Sproat. In early life he had married Sarah Hopkins, sister of Gov. Hopkins of R.I. Son John never married. He died 1819, wife died 1818. WHITE, Haffield - A major in the Rev. War. To Marietta, Ohio 1787. He lived with his son Pelatiah at Marietta until death. Major White a native of Danvers, Mass. WILLIAMS, Isaac & Rebecca - Isaac was born July 16, 1737, Chester Co., Pa. He went to Winchester, Va. with parents when a boy, who later in 1768 went to Brooke Co., Va. In Oct. 1775 Isaac married Rebecca Martin, daughter of Jos. Tomlinson of Md. She was the widow of John Martin who was killed on the Big Hocking in 1770. Her uncle Mr. Hartness was killed at the same time; both from Va. Rebecca was born Feb. 14, 1754 on Wills Creek in Md. She and brothers Samuel & Joseph went to western country 1774.
