The church there was called the Evangelical and services were held in German one Sunday and in English the next Sunday. Bucks township was given the name because of the abundance of deer there when the settlers arrived. It was settled mostly by Pennsylvania Germans and most of them came soon after the War of 1812, and increased rapidly after 1830. Among the earliest settlers were: Jacob GONTER and Jacob FORNEY, both from Pennsylvania about 1815. George GONTER came from Stoyestown, Pa. in 1812. His son David was born December 28, 1816. Following these were Philip and John MIZER, brothers; Henry STANCE; John MILLER and son Jacob; Abraham BERNTRAGER who came from Penna., having no children he adopted several; Benjamin HELWIG from Penna., first to Harrison Co., Ohio 1824, then here, was a noted hunter, a Lutheran, and had 10 children; and George HARSHMAN from Fayette Co., Pa. Others were Jonas SPENGLER, Frederick MAURER, Mr. MISHLER, John and George TRAVIS, John and Wm. DIETZ, Adam REGULA, Samuel LONG, Daniel KOENIG, Peter GEBHART, Lewis WENTZ, Valentine HOTHEM, Andrew POTZ, Balthazer BRETZENS, John ZINKON, John THOMAS Sr. & Jr., and Henry DIEBEL. Rev. Holm G.
