Jeptha born N.Y., October 14, 1792, in War of 1812, settled here in 1800, died August 11, 1873; his wife Merrilla born Watertown, N.Y., January 2, 1795, died March 13, 1877. Austin married here January 15, 1856, Marinda Dains born here September 14, 1835, daughter of Abial and Rebecca (Shumway) Dains, father born August 7, 1792, served in War of 1812, died March 3, 1851 and his wife Rebecca born July 6, 1797, from Dutchess Co., N.Y. to this county in 1809. Asa Dains, father of Abial Dains was soldier of Rev. war. Austin and brother Sardine in Civil war. Austin and Marinda had: Arli, Emery, Omer and Linnie. They lived Chester, Meigs County, Ohio. Martin Hecox, brother of Austin, born here September 14, 1819, married in Washington Co., Ohio January 30, 1860, Elmina Hitchcock (as 2nd wife), born in Franklin Co., Mass., March 13, 1830, daughter of Quarturs and Ardelia (Bond) Hitchcock. Quarturs born December 31, 1797 and Ardelia born December 2, 1803. Martin married 1st September 29, 1846 Nancy W. Stark who died July 15, 1848 and had: Mary and Arthur. Martin and 2nd wife Elmina had: Lillian and Myron. Elmina had brother, Myron Hitchcock died in Civil war. Lived Chester. Sardine Hecock, brother of Austin born here June 21, 1826, married in Athens County, March 25, 1855, Fannie Stout, born Athens County, February 23, 1829, daughter of George and Eliza (Buzzard) Stout. George Stout born near Trenton, N.J., March 17, 1792 and died April 21, 1875. His wife Eliza born Fayette Co., Pa., November 22, 1797 and died August 17, 1869. Sardine and Fannie had son Dudley. HOBSTETTER, Peter - Born Bavaria, Germany October 18, 1818, son of Philip and Margaretta (Bycecker) Hobstetter, both deceased. Peter came to America in 1836 to N.Y., then Wheeling W.Va. then soon here. He married here July 9, 1840 Anna M. Ihle, born Bavaria, Germany, March 1, 1821, daughter of Christopher Ihle, who died in Germany and his wife, Margaretta (Kalb) Ihle who came here in 1836 and died here 1854. Peter and Anna had: Peter, Elizabeth, Anna, Jacob, Conrad, Christina (lived Iowa), Charley, Mary (lived Indiana), Margaretta, Philip, and Susan. Lived Chester. HIGLEY, Milo H. - Born here November 18, 1832, son of Lucius and Nancy (Shepherd) Higley. Lucius in Civil war, died August 3, 1881 and wife Nancy died 1861. Milo married here June 17, 1855, Mary Pankey, born Buckingham Co., Va., April 28, 183, daughter of James and Mary (Agee) Pankey. James died 1868 and Mary his wife died September, 1855. Milo and Mary had: James, Kate, Edward, Adella and Bert. The grandfather of Milo was Brewster Higley, the first settler in Rutland Twp., this county. The U.S. Higleys all related. Milo had compass used by John Figley a seaman over 200 years ago. Milo and family lived Rutland, Meigs County, Ohio. HOOPER, Ira Wakeman - Born here September 30, 1848, son of William and Lucy (Higley) Hooper. William born Mercer Co., N.J. December 2, 1818, (minister and physician), married November 17, 1841, Lucy P. Higley, died March 21, 1877; Lucy born Gallia Co., Ohio August 31, 1855, daughter of Austin and Winnifred (Grate) Barton. Austin Barton born November 16, 1809 and wife Winnifred born May 17, 1815; married June 21, 1832; to Gallia County 1838 and to this county in 1844. Ira and Winnie had: Ora Edith and Dora. Lived Rutland, Ohio. HUBBELL, William W. - Born here October 20, 1821, son of Abijah and Lucretia (Merrill) Hubbell. The father of Abijah was Abijah Sr. who came to this county in 1801 from Otsego Co., N.Y., soldier of Rev. War, and died July 18, 1841. Lucretia's father ran first steamboat from Marietta to New Orleans and thence to N.Y. Abijah Jr. born Otsego Co., N.Y., to this county in infancy and his wife Lucretia born Newburyport, Mass., to this county at early day with her father, Capt. James Merrill, both members of Christian Church. Abijah Jr. in War of 1812, in later years a minister and went to Delaware Co., Iowa where he died November 2, 1863; Lucretia died February 15, 1863. William W. married here 1st in 1847 Olive Rightmire and had: Georgiana, Viola and Leonora. He married 2nd December 24, 1869, Caroline Boice, born Gallia County, August 31, 1838, daughter of Robert and Mary Ann (Vance) Boice. Robert Boice born in Pa., died Gallia Co., 1851 and wife Mary born in Va., remarried, living in Gallia County. William and Caroline have daughter Leila. William W. a Civil war soldier. Lived Rutland, Ohio. HUGG, Oren Branch - Born here May 12, 1850 son of Leonard and Lucinda (Stedman) Hugg. Leonard came here in 1812 from Tioga Co., N.Y. and wife Lucinda born here, daughter of Rev. Eli Stedman who came here in 1804 and was Free Will Baptist clergyman. Oren married Emma Eliza Powell born Steubenville, Ohio January 24, 1853, daughter of Sylvanus and Mary (Bradbury) Powell. Oren and Emma married December 22, 1872 and had: Ola, Myrta, Mary G. and Leonard P. They lived Langsville, Meigs co., Ohio. HASKINS, Joel - Born Dutchess Co., N.Y. August 29, 1774, son of Joel Sr. and Rachel (Hate) Haskins who died in Dutchess Co., N.Y. Joel Jr. Came here in 1815 and died January 12, 1841. He married April 10, 1803, Elizabeth Farr who lived and died in Dutchess County. Elizabeth died December 30, 1866. Joel Jr. and Elizabeth had Harris, Phebe, Bela, Elizabeth, Mary, Joel and Moses. Joel III married Zillah Reynolds and had son Joel IV who married June 6, 1880, Lizzie lawrence, born here March 4, 1859, daughter of John and Maria (Stout) Lawrence. HAWK, Samuel - Born N.J. April 15, 1848, son of John and Elizabeth Hawk, who came here when Samuel was eleven years old. Samuel and brother William in Civil war. Samuel married here October 8, 1868, Catherine Bentz, born here June 25, 1848, daughter of Conrad and Magdalena (Sweets) Bentz. Magdalena killed by lighting, May 5, 1869 at age 63. Samuel and Catherine had: Elizabeth, Charles, William, Sarah and Freddie. Lived Alfred, Ohio. HALLIDAY, John S. M.D. - Born here July 6, 1843, son of Alexander and Jane (Stanley) Halliday. Alexander died 1872. John S. married here February 27, 1865, Mary M. Lisle born Athens Co., Ohio June 13, 1848, daughter of Robert and Belinda (Rickey) Lisle. They had: Edward, Cora and Eva. John S. in Civil war. HAYMAN, Henry Clay - Born Mason Co., W.Va. April 6, 1824, son of Josiah (died 1864) and Nancy Adams (Ford) Hayman (died January 3, 1879). Henry married at Letart Fall, W.Va. November 18, 1847, Margaret Charlotta Wagner, born there September 11, 1822, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Heimelreich) Wagner. They had: George, Leonidas, Mary, Esther, Regina, Elnora, Addie, William, Nancy and Charles. HILAND, Robert J. - Born Fayette Co., Pa., July 30, 1820, son of William and Jane (McGinity) Hiland who came here about 1820. William born Fayette Co., Pa., died here November 7, 1881 and Jane born Dublin, Ireland, died here June 10, 1868. Robert J. married 1st April 13, 1848 to Mary Gilmore who died July 30, 1853, leaving daughters, Esther and Mary A. He married 2nd December 10, 1854 to Mary Dicky born Washington Co., Pa., August 2, 1831, daughter of Richard and Rebecca (Criss) Dicky, and had 9 children. HODGE, William B. - Born April 22, 1838 in Pendleton Co. Va., son of Jeremiah and Mary (Armstrong) Hodge. He married in Mason Co., W.Va. January 22, 1867, Villinnia C. Boggess, born Monroe Co., W.Va., July 3, 1840, daughter of Thorpson C. and Polly A. (Smith) Boggess. had 6 children. Wm. B. in Civil war. HOFF, Dr. Josiah - Born Harrison Co., Va. December 10, 1822, son of Cornelius and Jane (White) Hoff. Cornelius died January 18, 1880 and Jane died July 16, 1881. Josiah married in Wood Co., W.Va., December 17, 1846, Sarah A. Hopkins, born Wood Co., W.Va. March 1825, daughter of Levi and Priscilla (Coe) Hopkins and had Lulu, Florence, Helen, Nelville, Henry, Franklin and Edward. HUGG, Phineas - Born here May 20, 1823, son of John and Nancy (Spaulding) Hugg. John died February 15, 1827 and Nancy died December 24, 1843. He married here October 14, 1841, Frances A. Rathburn, born here December 7, 1822, daughter of Daniel and Lura (Higley) Rathburn, and had Cornelia, Samaria (lived Neb.) and Arthur. HUTCHINSON, Abraham I. - Born Belmont Co., Ohio October 17, 1851, son of Robert T. and Lydia A. (Johnson) Hutchinson. Robert later went to Mo. to live with son Robert. Abraham married here August 13, 1874 Mary Story born here in 1857, daughter of Alden and Jane (Ball) Story and had son J. Edgar. Abraham had 4 brothers in Civil war. Samuel C., John W., Wm. J. and Alex. HALL, Isaac Newton - Born here November 19, 1826, son of Eli and Mary (Lasley) Hall. Isaac was grandson of Aaron and Elizabeth (Brummage) Lasley (Aaron born in Md.) and John and Sarah (Hanbrisk) Hall from Pa. Isaac N. married May 16, 1854, Elizabeth Smith born here January 10, 1831, daughter of Erastus and Aurilla (Follet) Smith, and had daughter Frances V. Eli and Mary Hall had sons Alfred, Henry and Basil in the Civil war. HESS, John - Born Baden, Germany, January 16, 1822, son of Charles Philip and Eve Mary (Kyser) Hess. Eve died in Germany and Charles P. in America. John G. married June 9, 1851 in Pittsburg, Pa., Catherine Shippie, daughter of Peter and Anna (Sulzer) Shippie and had 1 child, Robert. He married next Eliza K. Wips and had 5 children. His 1st wife born 1820 in Switzerland. HALL, Spencer Marshall- Born here December 9, 1842, son of James Hall (born 1801) and Leah (Ford) Hall (born 1800). James parents from Unionntown, Pa in 1806, to this county with 3 small children. Leah was born in Md. and came here with widowed mother and 4 children. Leah's mother later married Seth Jones. Spencer M. married August 21, 1864, Nancy Matilda Sayre born March 23, 1847, daughter of Mark and Anna (Roush) Sayre, and had Alonzo and Norman.
