Funeral services were held Saturday the 7th, conducted by Rev. Motter of the M. E. church of Metamora, using as his text for an excellent discourse, 2nd Samuel, 3-38, at Santee Church. The deceased was born at Root, Montgomery Co., N. Y., in 1819, When 14 years of age he, with his parents moved to what is now known as West Toledo. He was united in marriage with Maria Wiggins, May 11, 1845. About 1850 they moved to Fulton county, settling on a farm in Royalton township where they resided until the death of his companion in 1880. To this union, 7 children, 4 sons and 3 daughters were born, all of whom, except one son, Bradford, are living. In 1884 he was again united in marriage with Catherine McHenry, and they resided in Lenawee Co., Mich., until her death in 1890. He was converted to God in early life and joined the Methodist Episcopal church. Shortly after, he became a licensed local minister and was an active worker in preaching the gospel and officiating at many funerals. His last work was preaching a funeral sermon for Mrs. Alice Giffrord, just about three days before his sickness. He was a very useful man in the community in which he lived, by helping and assisting his fellow-men. He was loved and esteemed by all. About 14 years ago he was stricken with paralysis, from which he only partially recovered and remained an invalid. During this time he exercised a cheerful disposition and bore his sickness with patience. His life should be an example to us all. He leaves 6 children, 29 grand-children and 6 great-grand-children, and a host of friends who mourn their loss, which is his eternal gain. (Newspaper clipping, From Ethlyn Mizer Finley) NOTES: Santee church was located a couple of miles north of US 20 on CR 7. Per Dot Finley, Samuel is buried in the Jordon cemetery which is on CR RS just east of SR 109, 1/2 mile north of US 20. There is a tombstone near the south east corner of the cemetery. Dot went there once with Valeda Mizer. They started from the west end, unfortnately, looking for Samuel's tombstone. The tombstone was in the 3rd row from the east end. She said that some of the letters were eroding. The tombstone is for his first wife, Frances Maria Wiggins. The tombstone is inscribed: Frances M. Gardinier, May 10, 1880, Ae 54y- 2d, W/o Samuel Gardinier. She was born May 8, 1826. The tombstone is in row 17, counting from the West end of the cemetery or the 3rd row from the east end. Samuel's daughter's last name was Bryan and lived in Swanton. Which is where he died. -------- Submitted by: Charles Paul Keller, Corpmiz@aol.com, March 13, 1999 Researching Surnames: BREITER, BITTIKOFER, BOEHM, ELLIS, FINLEY, GARDINIER, HARRINGTON, HOCHSTETLER, KELLER, KLINK, LEININGER, MCCONNELL, MIZER, ODEN, SCHROCK, SHIBLER, SNYDER, TITLOW, WIGGINS ------------------------------ X-Message: #5 Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 08:52:13 EST From: Corpmiz@aol.com Subject: Obit: Gardinier, Watson, Fulton Co., Ohio OBITUARY WATSON GARDINIER Watson Gardinier, son of Samuel and Maria Gardinier, was born March 11, 1856, on the home farm in Royalton township, Fulton county, Ohio. D. Mizer, Delta, Ohio. Dear Sir:-- Your letter regarding Harold Gardinier received and having known him personally I made a special trip over to Co. E in the second battalion stationed some distance from here to see if I could find out anything about the circumstances in which he met his death. Harold served with Co. E 126th Infantry thru all of the engagements in which the 32nd Division took part, including the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He was made sergeant after leaving the Soissons front and given command of the second platoon. He made an excellent record and was accredited as being one of the best sergeants in his company. He had to his credit the capture of 35 men and 1 officer and 7 machine guns. At the time of his death he was leading his men in an assault on hill 255, Argonne sector, to capture a machine gun nest. He seized a rifle and advanced ahead of his men in order to get a good aim, stood up in front of the machine guns and emptied his rifle into the nest. He thus succeeded in driving out the gunners of the nest but was instantly killed himself by a machine gun bullet, and never spoke a word to any of his men after that. He was buried on the crest of hill 255 and his personal effects were taken care of by the Chaplain who buried him. These effects will reach you no doubt in the near future. Harold was admired by all his comrades and was to have been sent to the officers training school upon being relieved from the sector but unfortunately he did not live to enjoy the privilege. Very Truly, Arthur R. Schofield (Newspaper clipping, From Ethlyn Mizer Finley) -------------- MILITARY FUNERAL SUNDAY Delta people and A. E. E. E. W. Post of the American Legion paid loving tribute Sunday in the full military burial service of two of our soldier boys who gave their lives in battle, for the defense of the old flag in France. Charles Ageten, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Ageten and Harold Gordanier, son of Mrs Alice Gordanier. For many months the body of private Ageten was counted among those lost in battle, later his burial place was found. The bodies were returned to Delta by the Government last week. The funeral service was a double one held in the Church of Christ. Rev. A. V. Wilson delivered an eulogy for private Ageten and Rev. W. I. Spring paid high tribute to Sergt. Gordanier. Rev. Lambert assisted in the service. The line of march lead to Greenlawn cemetery where the Legion Post conducted the military service. Rev. Dunham, of Wauseon officiating as Chaplain. A gun squad of eight soldier boys fired three volleys over the graves and taps were sounded for the lost comrades. In private life both of these young soldiers were exemplary young men and their death brought sorrow to every home in our community. ------------- Submitted by: Charles Paul Keller, Corpmiz@aol.com, March 13, 1999 Researching Surnames: BREITER, BITTIKOFER, BOEHM, ELLIS, FINLEY, GARDINIER, HARRINGTON, HOCHSTETLER, KELLER, KLINK, LEININGER, MCCONNELL, MIZER, ODEN, SCHROCK, SHIBLER, SNYDER, TITLOW, WIGGINS -------------------------------- End of OH-FOOTSTEPS-D Digest V99 Issue #151 *******************************************
