Burt MARK M. BURT Mark M. Burt, a leading citizen of Brown township, was born in Washington County, Penn, December 29, 1822, the son of Ebenezer and Sarah (Leonard) Burt, of Scotch lineage. He was the third in order of birth of ten children born to these parents, and received but a common education. He married Miss Elizabeth, the daughter of Reuben and Esther (McCleary) Emmick, of German origin, on the 7th of May, 1849. Their children are named Bethnel, Silas (deceased), Hiram, Theodore, Samantha (deceased), Melissa, wife of Frank Myers; Leah, wife of Richard Bates; Isaac (deceased), and Frank E. (deceased). The family are communicants of the United Brethren Church, while Mr. Burt belongs to the I. O. O. F. lodge, of Oakwood, which he joined in 1861. He is also a member of the G. A. R. post. September 10, 1863 Mr. Burt enlisted in the Ohio national guards, and went to the front as a member of Company H, One Hundred and Thirty-second regiment Ohio volunteer infantry. He was in the company which built the fortifications at Petersburg and Richmond, and was at Whitehouse landing. Returning home in 1864, he began farming. He had not many advantages for obtaining an education, though he worked hard for what he did receive. In 1861, he located in Paulding County, upon the land where he now resides, which is pleasantly located in Brown township. Mr. Burt signed the first ditch petition, and has been prominently identified with the improvements made in Brown township. His success in life has been due to his energy and hard work, and he is an expert and progressive agriculturist. ------------------------------ X-Message: #3 Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 09:27:09 -0500 From: Jane Peppler Subject: biography: Lou Burt This is from the "Life and Times of Henry Burt of Springfield" by Henry M. Burt. Background note: Lou was NOT a descendant of Henry Burt, but attended the first annual (1890) reunion of descendants of Henry Burt in Springfield MA anyway. He evidently had such a good time he went home and in 1894 initiated annual reunions of his own Burt tribe; many of the Henry Burt descendants he had met in Springfield attended. Important note: some of the information Lou provided for this biography is wrong! Contact me for more information. Jane Peppler jpeppler@acpub.duke.edu page 486 LOU BURT (descended from a Pennsylvania Family of Burts) Lou Burt was born in Cardington, Morrow County, O., in 1852, and is a son of Merritt Burt, who was afterward a prominent wholesale jeweler of Cleveland, O., and is still living, the proprietor of the Acme Hotel at Jacksonville, Fla. Lou Burt was educated at Hiram, O.; married in Cleveland in 1873; opened a wholesale jewelry house in Detroit, Mich., in 1882, in which he is still engaged. He is prominent in politics, and has been twice elected alderman to represent the fourth ward of Detroit. He is an officer in Detroit Commandery, Knights Templar; Potentate of Moslem Temple, Mystic Shrine, and president of the far-famed Rushmere Club, located at St. Clair Flats, the most extensive shooting and fishing club in the West, and of which he was one of the organizers. Mr. Burt has not yet been able to trace his ancestry back to Henry Burt, who settled in Springfield in 1640. His grandfather, Ebenezer Burt, and his grandfather's brother, William Burt, moved from Washington County, Pa., to New Denmark, Columbiana County, O., in or about 1815. The grandfather died suddenly, while hunting, in 1821. A history of Morrow county states that an ancestor of a supposed distant relative of this family, was born in Fayette County, Pa., and that in the early part of the seventeenth century three brothers came to America, two of whom engaged in the iron business in Pennsylvania. On the breaking out of the Revolution they sold their interest in the works. If this statement is correct and Mr. Lou Burt belongs to this line, of which it is not certain, then he is not a descendant of Henry Burt of Springfield. Some of the Warwick Burts migrated into the Wyoming Valley, and there is a possibility that he may have descended from some one of that line, proof of which is still lacking. ------------------------------ X-Message: #4 Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 09:55:27 -0500 From: Jane Peppler Subject: newspaper article Morrow: Burt Morrow County Independent, Dec 27 1882: "A pleasant reunion was held at the home of Mr. Adin Burt, on Christmas. Mr. Burt's father, Joseph Burt, and uncles Mark, Merritt, George, and Ebenezer Burt were present. This is the first time in thirty years these five brothers have met together and it goes without saying that the occasion was greatly enjoyed. The average weight of the company was 194 pounds, the heaviest 257 pounds, and the lightest 156 pounds." ------------------------------ X-Message: #5 Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 10:30:39 -0500 From: Jane Peppler Subject: bio - John J. Burt From ATLAS at the Paulding County Library: John J. Burt "Prominent among the leading farmers of Brown township is John J. Burt, a native of the "Buckeye" state. He was born in Morrow county, August 1, 1849, the son of Lot and Abigail E (Brown) Burt, of German and Irish extraction. His early life was passed upon the farm in Brown Township, and his education was obtained in the neighboring schools. He was married September 2, 1867 to Christina Fisher, daughter of Samuel and Julien (French) Fisher of German and English origin. Two children blessed this union, named Aden and Alfretta. On the 2nd of March, 1864, Mr. Burt enlisted in company C, One Hundred and Ninety first Ohio volunteer infantry, for one year, and received his discharge at Camp Chase, August 28, 1865. Returning home he engaged in farming and operating a sawmill, in connection with which he is now interested in the raising of fine sheep. Mr. Burt is a stanch republican, and held the office of township clerk for twenty-seven years, which fact demonstrates the popularity and esteem in which he is held, and the ability with which he discharged his duties." ------------------------------ X-Message: #6 Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 10:48:52 -0500 From: Jane Peppler Subject: wedding announcement from Morrow paper: Arminta Burt From Cardington Independent, Feb 24 1892 Dunham-Burt (from Bellefontaine Examiner) One of the prettiest weddings that ever occurred in Bellefontaine was the Dunham-Burt wedding which was solemnized at the Methodist Episcopal church last evening in the presence of a large and brilliant assembly of spectators, when Miss Araminta Burt, of this city, was wedded to Mr. C.
