His father died when he was five years old and his mother passed away in 1920. He was the older of two children, his brother, F.A. Doud; of Pittsford, Michigan, survives him. When he was 17 years old, he was converted during a revival service held in the Methodist church in Ney, by Rev. Wingate. During his entire life since then, he has been actively identified with Christian service. He united with the Church of God, but was interested in and worked in all churches. At different times he was engaged in evangelistic work and was a Sunday school teacher most of the time. He was especially interested in young people and it was always his earnest desire to win them to Christ. He was a careful student of the Bible and tried to be guided by its teaching in his private and business life. He was married to Miss Minnie Mavis of Farmer, May 30, 1901. They lived in Ney, and for two and a half years in New York, and in Sherwood since 1917. Mr. and Mrs. Doud had no children, but they obeyed the Scriptural injunction to "remember the fatherless" and gave a home and parents' love and care to four different children. His health began to fail nine years ago, but he continued his work and Sunday school activities until forced to give up three years ago. He was confined to his bed since last December, and although a great sufferer, bore it all with Christian patience, and found comfort in his Bible, which was always on his bed, and in the songs of Christian faith that he had committed to memory years ago. He will be missed by many friends and particularly by those who tenderly cared for him duringhis long illness, his wife and two foster daughters, Mrs. H.L. White of Toledo, and Mrs. Alvin Culler of Pittsburg, Pa. The funeral was held at the home, Saturday at 10 a.m., Rev. Angerer of the Methodist church, officiating. Burial in Sherwood cemetery. The pallbearers were Walter Prediger, Randle Doud, Chas. Doud, Roy Yarlott, Geo. Boterf, D.E. Moats. N.Y. Setp 13, 1817 and married Linas Doud April 20, 1834. They lived in Geuga (?) Co. for six years then moved to Defiance Co, Washington Twp, Sex 22 and erected a log cabin in the forest and began pioneer life. Roads were so poor and conditions so bad they were forced to endure many hardships. There were no schools in the Twp but a log cabin in Sec. 16 was used for school and elections. Mrs. Doud taught the first school in 1834 and Mr. Doud taught the Second School in the winter in Sec 23 which is now District #2 (this is near the Co line near the Old Marsh Place). Books used were English Reader, Elementary Speller, Adams Arithmetic and the Bible. Douds raised eight children who were teachers. At one time in her teaching she rocked one of the children, "Edward" in a sugar trough in the absence of a cradle. The cradle was borrowed from a neighbor near the school house and because she punished one of the woman's children, she sent for the cradle and took it home. The late Grant Figley and Jim Hatfield went to the woods and got a sugar trough. Mr. Doud was J.P. two or three terms from 1845-1854, was Twp Clerk for several terms, was elected Clerk 1842, Twp. Clerk 1843-44, and was elected clerk 1847, Twp. Clerk 1850, 1854, Twp Trustee 1855-1856. This is copied from Defiance Co. History. PS There is a mistake in dates. Hissong" To: "On Monday afternoon last, three men one of known as Capt. Jenkins called at the house of Linus Doud, in Washington Twp, about 10 miles west of Defiance to arrest his son. Albert, whom they considered as a deserter. Albert it appeared served three months service in 1861 and in 1862 was drafted, but suffered to return home not then being fit for duty. He stayed at home during the past winter and on the issue of the Presidents order calling on the absentees and deserters to return to their regiments he made his case kn own to Adj. Gen. Hill, who authorized him to remain for the present still at home. These circumstances were made known to the arresting party who still claiming him to be a deserter, ordered him into their buggy and on resisting, or as some say, running away, the Captain shot at him with a revolver three times, the third shot passing through his body, felled him. These officers then attempted putting him in the buggy but on his fainting away, they left him. This occurred at Mr. Doud's and is what is reported. The young man after intense suffering and agony, died on Wednesday evening. We regard it as a dastardly piece of business. These men we do not understand to be officers or even agents of the military authorities , but merely volunteers who make a business of picking up men absent from their regiments, for the standing reward, so we believe,$26. They had made other arrests in the same neighborhood, but with better success. They hail from Indiana. These men should not be shielded from punishment by the military authorities, but given over to the law, to answer for the cold blooded murder committed. Father and boy both claimed that the papers were sufficient to exempt, at least from the charge of desertion--but expressed entire willingness to obey, if not sufficient. This will not be doubted by any one acquainted with the elder Mr.. Doud, who is an honest, straightforward and peaceable man. We take the liberty to add that Linus Doud is a Republican, holding for years anti-slavery opinions. When the war broke out two of his boys, Albert being one, volunteered in the three months service; and last year two other of his sons went for three years in Capt. Southworth's Company. One of these latter, died this winter in Kentucky. Beside this one more of his soon-in-laws are or have been in the army. His house has been a kind of recruiting station, and he, while urging sons of others to go kept not his own at back. There is hardship in his case--but this last affliction as an outrage for which there can be no possible palliation." -------------------------------- End of OH-FOOTSTEPS-D Digest V99 Issue #281 *******************************************
