Brother Mell was united in marriage to Levina S. Shearer, November 16th, 1865, and three children blessed their union, his eldest daughter, Jettie, having preceded him to the better land. Brother Mell leaves a wife, a son and daughter and one granddaughter, three brothers and many other friends to mourn their loss. Brother Mell, with his wife, joined the Christian Church at West Cairo under the labors of Elder Martz, and lived devoted to his church till his death. He was a great suffer from a complication of diseases contracted while in the line of duty in the service of his country from '61 to '65 but endured all patiently and with that Christian fortitude that characterized the children of God. He died trusting in the God he served. Brother Mell was a quiet, peaceable neighbor, a loving husband and kind father. His funeral was held at the United Brethren Church, the services being conducted by Elder D. Lobaugh, assisted by the Rev. L. C. Reed, a large and sympathizing congregation being present, including the G. A. R. of which he was a worthy member. ______________________________ ------------------------------ X-Message: #3 Date: Sat, 06 Nov 1999 16:22:48 -0500 From: "Marvin D. Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Mrs. Levina Mell (nee Shearer) was born July 22nd, 1842 the sixth child of Michael and Elizabeth Shearer. In this home there was also three brothers and five sisters all of whom have gone beyond save on brother, Jonas Shearer, and one sister, Sue Shearer. November the 16th, 1865 occured the marriage of Levina Shearer to James Mell. These two were privileged to live together until twelve years ago when the husband died leaving the wife saddened whose heart death has now gladdened in that she too could be taken with loved ones where we will part no more. To this union there were born three children. One daughter in dead. The other children survive her, namely Minnie Mell and James Mell. One grandchild blessed her life but eleven years ago it too was taken from earth. One can hardly imagine the happiness that is now hers in that so many who were dear to her awaited her coming. Affliction had been upon Mrs. Mell some months. The last few weeks she gradually gave way to the strength of disease. But she was patient and unafraid. She accepted Christ early in her wedded life and until the end she was comforted that His promise ws sure and that when the end came that blessing of His larger life. Songs of His praise were a source of strength to her heart and prayer brought a peace that affliction could not disturb. The end came July 14th, 1913 at the age of 69 years 11 months, and 22 days. A long life closed by an easy and hopeful death was hers. It was of the kind that makes our faith stronger in that we know her, and it now comforts us as we say to her "Good-bye." ______________________________ ------------------------------ X-Message: #4 Date: Sat, 06 Nov 1999 16:28:35 -0500 From: "Marvin D.
