Pat C Deno.txt 16 Oct 1999 Family Group Sheet - -----------------------------------------------------------------------= ----- Husband: Lewis "Lew" Henry DENO #1056 =20 - -----------------------------------------------------------------------= ----- Born: 13-May-1854 in: Keesville,NY = 1 Baptized: in: =20 Died: 1933 in: CO = 1 Buried: in: =20 Other: in: =20 Ref: Occupation: =20 Father: Lewis Henry DENO #1054 Mother: Angelina RABEDEAU #1055 In 1904 the family moved from Lester to Sioux City,IA but due to = Minnie's health,they were advised to move to a higher and dryer climate.So they = came out from Iowa in 1908 to Colorado and homesteaded 18 miles southeast of = Akron which is now south of Akron on Hwy 63 to the base line and east 7 miles = on the north side of the road.Homestead houses were always referred as "Claim = Shacks" Before moving to Colorado,Lew had a general merchandise store in = Alta,Iowa and Lester,Iowa.In the Lester store Minnie had a millinery shop and made beautiful hats.They were marvelous creations with many ostrich = feathers,willow plumes,etc. She was also a very fine seamstress.Lew was always = interested in northeastern Colorado,and in 1907 he and an old friend,R.H.Spencer,known = as Grandpa Spencer,arrived in Akron hunting homesteads.Everything close to = Akron was taken up and Lew filed for a homestead 18 miles southeast of Akron = with Grandpa Spencer homesteading just across the road west of him.Returning = to Iowa,he disposed of nearly all their possessions except a few household items,which included their piano,which Minnie felt she could not leave = behind. On this homestead they resided until the spring of 1914,when they had a = sale and moved to Akron,where Lew became a real estate agent and farmed on = the side.
