Sandusky Sept 4, 1807 Sir: Hugh Pattinson has under taken in various ways to scandalize my character-he has gone into such lengths in libell against me, that I think it a duty I own to my family and mysslf to call on him for a settlement of the business in a legal way. If he comes into Detroit I wish you to commence a suite against him on my behalf for $10,000 dollars damages. Hugh Pattinson has in a complaint against Joseph Badger to Govenor Hull (?), stated that "the said Joseph Badger hath for a long time part and still doth live in a state of fornication and adulltry at Sandusky afforesaid, and the same evil practices hath bengnitly of at diverse other places with in this Territory with Elizabeth Whitaker, wife of James Whiteker late of Sandusky, deceased, and with her doth cohabit as man and wife, unbecoming his character and dignity, and against the moral precepts of the religious office of his priesthood and to the evil example of all those which whom he is sent to preside and emmulate the principals of religion and virtue." Again he writes in his reply to Mr. Badgers letter to His Excellency; directed to Gerry McDougall, Esq. "You who are acquainted from experience with the intreagues and jealouses of Mrs. Whitaker to engage the whole trade of their country to herself; and having personally suffered under the foul aspurgeons of her scandulous tongue, ought not to be surprised at the length she goes now with me" Again, "If I have four or eight barrels of liquor in my store, it is no more than his friend Mrs. Whitaker has".
