In the Name of the Benevolent Father of All I George Claus sen. of Thompson Township, Seneca County Ohio, do make and publish this my last will and Testament. Item 1st It is my desire that all my just debts shall be paid from my personal property. Item 2nd I give and devise to my son William Claus and his heirs the farm on which I now reside situated in Section thirty-five, in Thompson Township Seneca County Ohio, and being Eighty (80) acres of land; But subject to the Dower interest of my wife. And also subject to the following conditions: One year after the death of my son in Law Conrad Wissler or if my beloved wife should survife my said son in Law, then after her death, my son William shall pay to my daughter Mary Wissler, One Thousand Dollars in the manner following: Four hundred Dollars the first year, Three Hundred Dollars the second year, and Three Hundred Dollars the third year after the last of the above mentioned deaths with interest at six percent to be computed from the date of the last above mentioned deaths. Item 3rd I give and devise to my son Charles Claus or his heirs fifty (50) acres of off the real estate situated in Section Twenty five (25) in Washington Township Defiance County Ohio and bounded as follows: Being all that part of the East part of the southwest quarter of said section, being on the north side of the road, known as the Bellefountain road, being a strip 55 rods East and West, and being forty (40) acres of land. And also Ten (10) acres from the northwest quarter of Section, Township and County afore said, along the north line of the above described forth acres; 55 rods from East to west, and North and South far enough to contain Ten (10) Acres of Land in all fifty (50) Acres. Item 4th I give and bequeath to my three children: George, Mathew and Catharina Claus, wife of Anthony Wilhelm and their heirs, the remaining one hundred and fifty acres of land, of the real estate above mentioned, which they shall divide among themselves according to their mutual agreement. Item 6th I do hereby nominate and appoint my esteemed friend John Rospert Executor of this my last will and Testament, hereby authorizing and empowering him to compromise, adjust, release and discharge, in such manner as he may deem proper, the Debts and claims due me. I do also authorize and empower him, if it shall become necessary, in order to pay my debts, to sell by private sale or in such manner, upon such terms of credit or otherwise as he may deem proper, all or any part of my real Estate, and Deeds to purchasers to execute, acknowledge and deliver in fee simple. I also empower and authorize him to make my children George, Mathew, Charles, and William Claus and Catharina Wilhelm a good and sufficient Deed, to sell my personal property and dispose of the income thereof as directed in Item 5th. Item 7th I desire that no appraisment of my personal property shall be made and that the court of Probate direct the omission of the same, in pursuance of the Statutes. A hundred deaths occurred in the city of Columbus from July 14th to September 29th. There are no figures for deaths outside of Columbus, with the exception of Madison Twp. Here, over 35 people perished. The source of this information was an article by John forman, "The First Cholera Epidemic in Columbus, Ohio (1833)." It was published in the Annals of Medical History, Vol. 4, pp 410-416. His main sources where Ohio State Journal and Columbus Sentinel articles of the time. Microfilms of these newspapers are available through the Ohio Historical Society. The author sites the final report of the Board of Health dated November 2, 1832.
