Esther Sells, 88, of Madiera, Ohio, died Thursday morning in her residence. Born Oct. 18, 1896 in Ross County, she was the daughter of Isaac and Alice Hester Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband Byron Sells on Oct. 18, 1983. She is survived by one brother, Edgar K. Wilson of Greenfield, and one sister, Dora Sulcebarger of Washington C.H.; nieces and nephews, Jack Wilson of Hillsboro, Jim Wilson of Greenfield, Mrs. Oscar (Virginia) Massey and Mrs. Donald (JoAnn) Morehead both of Greenfield, Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Adams of Washington C.H., Stephen Wilson of Hillsboro, and Mrs. Grace Winters of Buena Vista. She was preceeded in death by three brothers and one sister. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Murray's Funeral Home with Rev. Robert K. Blaine officiating. Harry was the second husband of Nora Hester, whose maiden name was Nora Spurgeon. "DEATHS. Harry L. Smith. Harry L. Smith, 90, of Greenfield, died Thursday, December 20 at the Greenfield Area Medical Center. He was born May 31, 1900, in Ross County, the son of Hiriam and Emily (Countryman) Smith. He was a member of the Fourth Street Holiness Church. He is preceeded in death by first wife, Violet, second wife, Nora, one son, Paul Smith, six brothers and four sisters. He is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Rose of Greenfield, Mary Gragg of Frankfort, Olive Good of Greenfield, Janice Hampton of Portsmouth, one son, Carl Hatfield of Washington C.H., 28 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed This newspaper obituary clipping originally came from Bessie Chenoweth, and went through several people before it came to me. The newspaper is unknown, but is most likely one of the Adams County newspapers. " Caroline Cokonougher Shoemaker, dau. of Christopher and Elizabeth Cokonougher was born in VA on Dec. 18, 1825 & departed this life June 19, 1919. She came to this part of the country with her parents when she was 9 yrs. of age & spent her life in this moderate neighborhood. She was a member of the Brethern Church at Straight Creek. She leaves to mourn her loss: 2 dau Margaret Freeze of Clermont Co. & Lucinda Evans of Peebles, OH. She has 16 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren to mourn her loss. She was buried in the Locust Grove Cemetery on the 21st day of June." ************************************* Transcription of a 1988 letter probably from Zelma Knauff to Ena Mulford : "1988 Fri Eve Peebles, Ohio Dear Cousin, Am Sorry that I neglected writing you. But I don't have Lucille Williams address yet. But she is Bessie Chenowit' daughter. and David Freeze is her grandfather. Bessies dad. But Caroline lived & died in their home. Lucille said she could remember when they came out of the Bedroom & told them she was dead. She didn't go to funeral But stayed with Grandma Freeze at house. I have spent weekend with them a lot. They didn't have any convenience But not many of us did have at that time. Was glad to get the death certificate of Caroline. Will have to tell my cousin the cemetery - caretaker we have record to show she was Buried a Locust Grove Cemetery. Mom always went to the top of the hill with her little Bunch of flowers is why we knew where it was at." (The rest of this copy of the letter is missing from the information sent to me.) ******************************************** The following information is oral family history from Zelma Swayne Knauff, and it has made the rounds among Cokonougher researchers. It was given to Zelma by her cousin, Lucille Williamson. Lucille's mother Bessie (Freeze) Chenoweth is the one that put together some sort of family history. The researcher should keep in mind that the facts contained herein have been filtered through several generations of memories, and should be verified before being taken as gospel. "Caroline Cokonougher born in VA. Her parents - Chris Jr. & Elizabeth/Betsy Dodds. Caroline's dau - Margaret Annvalee Lewis/Cokonougher married Sampson Freeze. Sampson & Margaret had 16 ch. Their 3rd. ch was David Sampson Freeze. He was father of Bessie (Freeze) Chenoweth. Bessie had dau. Lucille Williamson. Sampson & Margarets 16th ch. was Ona Ethel Freeze who m. Russel W. Swayne. Zelma's pars. were Ona & Russell." "Christopher Cokonougher & Elizabeth Goods was married the 14 day of June 1821. Christopher was born Mar 11, 1797. Children - James Cokonougher Born May 30, 1822. Zacarah Cokonougher Born June 16, 1823. Atteson Cokonougher Born June 28, 1824. Caroline Cokonougher Born December 18, 1825 (Zelma's, my Great Grand Mother. Died June 19, 1919.) Ruhamay Cokonougher Born Feb. 22, 1827. This is from Freeze Reunion Book. Evan Evans 1854 - 1908 Lucinda 'Cindy' 26 Nov. 1852 - 1932 (Husband & wife) Caroline Cokonougher was daughter of Christopher Cokonougher. He was the son of Christopher Cokonougher. Must be Sr. & Jr. the best I make of it. He married Mary Maglean Longnecker. His Brothers were Joseph & Jacob Cokonougher. Margaret Annvalee Lewis Born Sept 6, 1846. Cindy Frost Born Nov. 26, 1852. Charles Conrad, son of Frederick and Rebecca Duncan Conrad was born on the John Brown farm near Chapman, Ohio, January 24, 1846 and departed this life at his home in Coalton, Ohio November 18, 1937, age 91 years 9 months, 25 days. He joined Company L, 12th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry on October 10, 1863 serving through two years and one month of the Civil War. He was married on February 28, 1875 to Mildred Wykle of Petrea O. To this union was born ten children, two daughters, Norma and Martha, preceding him in death. Those of his family left to mourn his loss besides his wife are Harry, Mrs. Frank (Nellie) James and Mrs. Robert (Mary) Giltnane of Dayton, O., Frank, of Buffalo, O., Ray, of Cadiz, O., Mrs. Wilson (Ales) Grimes of Jackson route 4, Clyde and Norman, of Coalton. He also leaves 27 grandchildren and 18 great grand children, one brother, James, of Wellston; three half brothers, Fred, Edward and Lewis and one half-sister , Mrs. Barbara Horstman of Jackson.
