Cokonougher" To: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: Subject: Hixon, Hixson, Hickson family info from M. Gant - part 2 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Part 2 of a letter written by Majorie Gant; Kalamazoo, MI to Ralph Cokonougher; New Holland, OH (Part 1 may be found in the submission before this.) : August 11, 1980 ......... "Now, Senior and Junior - they may be uncle and nephew, or even cousins, and occasionally father and son. It simply means that when a man is named Junior, there was an older member of the same family, who bore the same name ........ To come back to our own Hixson families, I have deeds that prove William Hixon had a son Timothy Hixson, Jr. and Capt. Timothy Hixson had a son he called Benjamin Hixson, Jr. I know it sounds crazy, but that is the way it is. William Hickson, first appeared on Tithable List of Loudoun Co., Va. in 1765. In 1774 Matthew Hixon deeded half of a tract of land (440+ acres in all) to William Hixon. William Hixon died intestate in 1798, in Loudoun Co., Va. His sons, David and Benjamin Hixon, were appointed administrators. The estate was divided into eight shares, according to a deed made by Wm. Paxson, of Loudoun Co., Va. who acquired most of this land. The heirs of William Hixon, as shown by 'unrecorded' deeds of their shares of the estate were: 1) Timothy Hixson, Jr. and wife Sarah, deed dated 1799, Loudoun Co., Va. 'his share of his father, William's estate. Provision was made for the dower rights of his mother, Alice Hixon. 2) Joseph Hixon, and wife Charlotte, 1799 (same date as above) Loudoun Co., Va. 'his share of his father, William's estate' Provision was made for the dower rights of his mother, Alice. The records of the above two deed have been found in a Court Order Book of Loudoun Co., Va., microfilmed records from the L.D.S. Library in Salt Lake City, Utah; rented and viewed by Mr. John Clark, of Delaware, Ohio, at a branch library, L.D.S. 3) James Hixson, (I believe of Northumberland Co., Pa., I am not sure of the date) Deed for 'his share of his father, William's, estate. 4) David Hixson, deed dated 1804, Loudoun Co., Va., no wife mentioned; 'his share of his father, William's, estate; his mother, Alice Hixon, is not mentioned. 5) Daniel Hixson, 1806, of Ross Co., Northwest Territory; no wife is mentioned ; his share of his father William's estate; his mother, Alice Hixon, is not mentioned. 6) Benjamin Hixson, wife, Elizabeth, dated ?; Loudoun Co., Va. 'his share of his father William's estate; no mention of his mother, Alice Hixon. William Paxson, of Loudoun Co., Va. eventually acquired these 'shares' of William Hixon's land (estate). Benjamin Hixson's deed was properly recorded in the Loudoun Co. Deed Book, at the time he made the deed. William Paxson deeded the accumulated land in one parcel. He noted there were eight shares. 7) Heir, MATTHEW HIXSON, had not deeded his share to anyone. In selling the tract, he made a provision for Matthew's land to be given to him, if and when he should claim it. 8) The heir, or owner of the 8th share is not named at any time. One must conclude this 8th heir may have been a daughter, but there is no proof of that. The thought occurred, that the wife of William Paxson might have been a daughter of William and Alice Hixon, but this does not seem to be true. At a much later date, the name of ALICE HIXON appears in a Court Order Book, but there is no explanation as to what family she belonged to. No information has been found that would indicate her age. She apparently lived in the area where William Hixon's land was located. I doubt very much that this could be Alice Hixon, widow of William Hixon. Benjamin Hixson was born about 1760, according to the Tithable List. Timothy Hixson, Jr. was born Oct. 23, 1763, Loudoun Co., Va. according to his tombstone inscription in Paint Twp., Ross Co., Ohio. Their mother would have been about 100 years old at the time the Alice Hixon is reported in the Court Order Book." I hope this will give you some insight into what Mrs. Pearson had discovered. All of the letters these excerpts were taken from were typed when she couldn't see a thing she had written, even with a magnifying glass - - and there is rarely a mistake! I have tried to include a little to give you a bit of the 'flavor' of her letters. She was nearing 80 when she died, if I remember right. I don't know if anyone has ever done anything with her material - - it would be a shame if they didn't. Her daughter wrote to tell me that she had died. Also, I haven't seen the book she mentioned by" [Name withheld, for privacy.] "- - have you? I hope you can read this - - my typewriter could use some work. Also, I am not proofreading it, so hope there aren't too many mistakes. Another thing, Mrs. Pearson mentioned that now these unrecorded deeds, with other unrecorded deeds, have been recorded in a new volume, in the courthouse in Leesburg, Va. (in 1976). She didn't mention the Volume No. but promised to send it later. Unfortunately, that was almost her last letter. About seven months ago, I sent for the 1900 census of Ross Co. It came last week, and as much as I hate to shut myself up in a library in the summertime, I felt I had to take the time. You probably already have the information from these two entries, but I thought I would include them. 1900 Census Ross Co. Ohio, Buckskin Twp. (South Salem). 114 115 Steinmetz, Henry 59 Helen 54 H. I don't know why I didn't do a more thorough job of copying them. I didn't find anything on our Hixons. Mrs. Pearson once said that there was a lot of T.B., especially among the Hixons, and that Nancy was about the only one who lived a long life. (I don't think I knew that the Steinmetz were your ancestors, until I was rereading your chart. I think it just took my eye because I am tracing a Steinmetz family (Wisconsin) for my son-in-law's family tree. Please let me know what you want less - - information about William or Timothy's children, or some of the information gathered by researchers about the earliest Hicksons?
