Investigation by the California Highway Patrol and the coroners office have established that Osborne was flipped out of his car and onto the highway dividing strip after his car had sideswiped a second vehicle. Then his driverless car, which was headed south, turned east and went across both lanes of northbound traffic, and out into a graveled area for 15 to 20 feet, moving in a circle. Striking a bump in the gravel, the car swung back onto the highway westbound, went back across the two northbound lanes and the right front and right rear wheels passed over the body of Osborne on the divider. Osborne's car continued across the two southbound lanes and nosed into an embankment at the edge of the highway. The autopsy revealed that Osborne suffered a fractured skull from being hurled out of his car onto the roadway. He might have survived that accident, but the second incident when his own body car passed over Osborne's body inflicted severe internal injuries. The combination proved fatal and the motorist died a short time later in a hospital. The second car, sideswiped by Osborne, was sent out of control and turned over against the west bank. The driver was not injured. An inquest will be held later this month on the accident, the coroner said. Mr. Osborne, WWII Navy veteran was born in Sadieville, Kentucky. He leaves a wife, Hedy, two sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Sowers Osborne Houston, Saginaw, Michigan, and Mrs. Janice Lee Osborne Gillespie in Cincinnati, Ohio. Burial at the Golden Gate Veterans Cemetery. _________ Dimmitt Melwood Osborne was son to Wesley Dimmitt Osborne and Emma Belle Sowers, Cottageville, Lewis Co., Kentucky.
