Mell was born in Allen County, Ohio July 15, 1838, and died at his home , one mile west of West Cairo, December 20, 1907, aged 69 years, 5 months and 5 days. Mr. Mell was united in marriage to Nancy A. Miller, December 10, 1863. To them were born five children, three of which, with the mother, have preceded him in the spirit land. Mr. Mell was again united in marriage to Elizabeth Morris, June 14, 1874. To this union were born eight children, one daughter having preceded him to the be better world. Mr. Mell leaves a devoted wife, five sons and four daughters: also, nineteen grandchildren and many friends to mourn their loss. At the age of 25 years he united with the West Cairo Christian Church and was baptized under the labors of Elder Michael Martz, and lived a devoted Christian life until death. He was unable to attend service during the last four years on account of ill health. He was a great sufferer from a complication of diseases contracted while in the line of duty in the service of his country, having served in Company D, 118th Ohio Volunteers: on account of ill health he was honorably discharged. He endured all his suffering with that Christian fortitude that characterized the children of God. He died trusting in the God he loved. Mr. Mell was a quite man, peaceable neighbor, a loving husband and a kind and devoted father. Having told his dear ones around his bedside good-bye, he said he was ready to take that long, last rest, and closed his eyes in sleep, only to awake in that better world. Funeral services, were conducted at the West Cairo Christian Church, Sunday, at 10 A.M. by Rev. C. J. Hanee, of Spencerville, O., assisted by Rev. W. H. Thompson, pastor. Interment was made in the cemetery west of the village. Where the weather & fishing is always great. Have a good day. Mell, D.D. of Lima has had a long and active career as an educator, minister of the Christian church, farmer and business man. He has been a worker all his life, and has sought to the limit of his strength and opportunity to give a worthy service he passed through the world. He has done a great deal of good and is one of the most widely known men in Northwest Ohio. He belongs to the pioneer element in Allen county. He was born on a farm 7 1/2 miles north of Lima September 17, 1853 and grew up in a country district. He largely educated himself, since his father did not give him a dollar after he was fifteen years of age. He has been in church work either as a layman and a minister since early youth. Though he has now practically retired, he preaches at a church at Brock in Darke County, and has charge of the property at Lima belonging to Defiance College. He still owns the old home farm of eighty acres. That farm has an interesting record. It has never been out of the Mell name or ownership since it came direct from the government, and only three deeds have been recorded on it. No mortgage has ever been laid against the land. Mr. Mell is a son of John C. and Cathern (Jones) Mell. His grandfather George Mell was a native of Virginia, came to Ohio as a boy, lived in Warren County until 1833 and then took his three sons to Allen County. The first marriage license issued in Putnam County, Ohio, was to marry his second wife. He located in that section of Putnam County that is now Allen county, and he operated the first grist mill in Sugar Tree Township of Allen County. He was a soldier of the War of 1812. George Mell was of English and Welsh descent. Mr. Mell's material grandfather was Rowland Jones, a native of Wales, who came to Ohio in 1827, locating in Butler County, and in 1835 in Allen County, where he took up land from the Government. He spent his life as a farmer and was a man of strong religious inclinations and the first Sunday school in Sugar Tree Township was organized in his house. John C. Mell, father of Rev. Mr. Mell, was born in Warren County, Ohio, in 1823, and died February 13, 1901. His wife was born in Wales in 1825 and died March 18, 1892. They were married in Allen County November 6, 1852. Their six children were: George R.; Margaret M., who married C. H. Parish, both now deceased; Sarah J. Mell, who lives with her brother George; Ann Eliza, who died in infancy; John E., who was born April 25, 1863, and died in 1904; Peter T., a contractor at Lima. John C. Mell was a member of the Christian Church and his wife belonged to the Welsh Congregational Church. She united with that church at Gomer, Ohio, when ten years of age. John C. Mell also took an active part in local affairs as a democrat. For twenty-one years he served as a justice of the peace and for fifteen years township clerk. In early life he followed school teaching and later became a successful farmer. George R. Mell after the advantages of country schools secured the rest of his education in the intervals of hard work for his support. He attended, nearly one school year, the Ohio Northern University at Ada, spent a year at Antioch College, and took three years selected work at the National Normal University of Lebanon. Altogether he was a school teacher and a student in these various institutions for nearly eleven years, and he also took correspondence courses in the East. He had the degree of Doctor of Divinity conferred on him in year 1914 by the Milton University of Baltimore, Maryland. He began his ministerial labors with the Northwest Ohio Conference as a licensed exporter on November 5, 1880. He was ordained after passing the requisites of the Conference on October 9, 1881. The ordaining committee were G. B. Garner, Michael Marts, and E. H. Umphress. His first church was Bethlehem Church in Allen County and he preached there while a student. For three years he was in charge of the church at Arthur in Paulding County, ant a three different times had pastorates in Montgomery county covering a period of fourteen years. He also held various churches in Allen and adjoining county. His individual church membership has been with the West Cairo Christian Church for forty-nine years. For twenty-five years he was a member of the board of examinations and was assistant secretary of the Conference for ten years and secretary fifteen years. He has been a member of the Conference Committee since he was ordained and has been a member of the publication committee on! the Conference. On March 23, 1882, Mr. Mell married Alice A. Ford. She was born in Allen County and died January 27, 1889. On November 5, 1891, he married Mrs. Ida Thompson. She was born in Covington, Ohio, and died January 28, 1913. Mr. Mell was married February 24, 1915 to Josephine R. Richeson. Mrs. Mell was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, a daughter of John T. and Sarah Lieuellen Richeson. Both her parents were born near Wilmington, Ohio, and her father was reared in Auglaize County. In the Richeson family were six children and the four now living are: Dr. Carrie A. Richeson, who for more than twenty five years practiced medicine and surgery at Bellefontaine, Ohio; Mrs. Mell; Martha R., wife of E. C. Couch, a machinist at Defiance; and John Lloyd, who is connected with the Big Four Railway Company at Indianapolis. Mrs. Mell's father was Methodist and by trade a brick maker. Mr. Mell is affiliate with the Lodge and Encampment of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and has filled various chairs in the Encampment and at four different times was high priest. Politically he is a prohibitionist and has been actively identified with that cause all his life. ______________________________ ------=_NextPart_000_04AB_01C152C1.80874900 Content-Type: message/rfc822; name="Fw_ OBIT_ Mell, Andrew S._ 1969_ Allen County.eml" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Fw_ OBIT_ Mell, Andrew S._ 1969_ Allen County.eml" X-Message: #6 Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 13:04:07 -0400 From: "MaggieOhio" To: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <138001c1362e$dc15db60$0300a8c0@local.net> Subject: Fw: OBIT: Mell, Andrew S.: 1969: Allen County Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale Nelson" To: Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2001 3:02 PM Obituary The Lima News June 28, 1969 Andrew Sylvester Mell, 89, of 406 N. In this home there was also three brothers and five sisters all of whom have gone beyond save one brother, Jonas Shearer, and one sister, Sue Shearer. November the 16th., 1865 occurred the marriage of Levina Shearer to James Mell. These two were privileged to live together until twelve years ago when the husband died leaving the wife saddened whose heart death has now gladdened in that she too could be taken with loved ones where we will part no more. To This union there were born three children. One daughter is dead. The other children survive her, namely Minnie Mell and James Mell. One grandchild blessed her life but eleven years ago it too was taken from earth. One can hardly imagine the happiness that is now hers in that so many who were dear to her awaited her coming. Affliction had been upon Mrs. Mell some months. The last few weeks she gradually gave way to the strength of disease. But she was patient and unafraid. She accepted Christ early in her wedded life and until the end she was comforted that His promise was sure and that when the end came that blessing of His larger life. Songs of His praise were a source of strength to her heart and prayer brought a peace that affliction could not disturb. The end came July 14th, 1913 at the age of 69 years, 11 months, and 22 days. A long life, closed by and easy and hopeful death was hers. It was of the kind that makes our faith stronger in that we know her, and it now comforts us as we say to her "Good-bye." ______________________________ ------=_NextPart_000_04AB_01C152C1.80874900 Content-Type: message/rfc822; name="Fw_ OBIT_ Mell, John C. 1901_ Allen County.eml" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Fw_ OBIT_ Mell, John C. 1901_ Allen County.eml" X-Message: #8 Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 13:06:45 -0400 From: "MaggieOhio" To: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <138601c1362e$dd871ea0$0300a8c0@local.net> Subject: Fw: OBIT: Mell, John C. 1901: Allen County Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dale Nelson" To: Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2001 3:24 PM Obituary from the Unity Herald, Thursday, March 7, 1901--supplied by John Mell Died----John C. Mell was born near Centerville O., May 26, 1823, and died Feb. 13, 1901, aged 77 years, 8 months and 17 days. Mr. Mell emigrated with his father to Allen Co.,O., in 1832, and resided there until he emigrated to the paradise of the soul. Mr. Mell and Catherine C. Jones were united in marriage Dec.,2, 1852, which union was blessed with three sons and three daughters, two daughters of whom preceded him to the home of the blessed. His devoted Christian wife also departed this life March 18, 1893. Brother Mell's vocation has been principally that of a farmer, however, he was noted for his active interest taken in the general welfare of the public. He taught school nine years, and was entrusted with the office of Justice of the Peace eighteen years, and was township clerk sixteen years, and town treasurer at West Cairo near four years, serving the public near forty-seven years, from which he retired in honorable esteem. He retired from active farm work and moved to West Cairo in 1893, where he resided until his death. Under the pastorate of Rev. M. Martz, in 1866, Brother Mell united with the Christian church at West Cairo, O. His life has been one of devotion to the church, and consecration to the cause of Christ, ever loving righteousness and leaving an exemplary life as a citizen, husband, father and Christian. Brother Mell was a great student of sacred literature, the Bible his chief text-book and rule of faith and practice. He served as superintendent of the Sunday School near 12 years, at different times. Also Sunday School teacher 32 years. He devoted his Lords's day, February 10, teaching his class to improve the talents committed to their trust, that they finally may hear their Lord say, "Well done thou good and faithful servants enter thou into the joy of they Lord." One chief point of growth in grace he said, was to have an hour of Prayer every day. His custom was to have family worship three hundred and sixty-five time a year. He also was a prominent worker in the township Sunday School Convention, being an officer of the same form some time. Brother Mell's busy life in this world came to close Wednesday morning, February 13th, while sitting in his chair at his late home in West Cairo, Ohio. His was a busy, useful life that suddenly came to a close apparently without a struggle or pain. He leaves to mourn, his sons, Rev. G.R. Mell, J. E. Mell, P. G. Mell, and his daughter, Sarah J. Mell, and six grandchildren, two brothers, and a number of other relatives and friends with the church. Garner, W. C. Rimer, L. gander, I. J. Miller, J. Wright, who offered very appropriate remarks. The remains were interred in Gomer cemetery, Gomer, O. T. K.
