Summers" To: Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2001 11:13 AM Subject: A Submission, from a Newspaper Article CUYAHOGA An Ohio newspaper article from the PRESS of February 28, 1951... GRAVE FUNDS APPEAR, 50 YEARS LATE By George Davis Cleveland's Erie Street Cemetery finally received a fund, willed a half century ago, to keep the grass cut on the grave of J. L. Weatherly, founder and first president of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce's parent Board of Trade of Cleveland. Mary Weatherly, one of his descendants, left the money when she died in Philadelphia soon after 1900. It was slow getting here because when it was ready to be sent her own executor had died and his executors were told the cemetery soon would be abandoned. That was in 1907. While the executors still waited to hear when the graves were to be moved, the Chamber of Commerce set up a granite marker on the grave in 1940. Election had followed election. The proposal to abandon the cemetery had been crossed off and no one had remembered to tell them about it in Philadelphia. Provident Trust Co. in Philadelphia woke up a year or two ago and wrote Cleveland. Result of this inquiry is that the money finally has reached Director Arthur Munson of the Department of Public Properties at City Hall. PERPETUAL CARE It's $300, and an additional $22.50. Meanwhile, the value of the Philadelphia estate has increased and the directors have arranged for perpetual care of the grave in Cleveland. Actually, the grass had been kept cut without regard to funds or lack of them in Philadelphia. The grave is topped by a white stone crypt. It is so weathered no carving on it can be read, but its shape makes it notable. J.L. Weatherly was a produce merchant. He boarded at the Angier House and ate broiled snipe there when the Angier was known for its cooking, best west of New York. His office was at the dock where hotel buses met many small passenger ships. He opened a coffee depot there to sell coffee throughout all this lake region. But everybody preferred tea and the depot closed with tons of coffee beans unsold. Weatherly was a first chief of the fire department when volunteers ran on foot with engines they pumped by hand. Fire fighting was a sport and rival companies fought with their fists. The first local fire boat was named Weatherly. He was born in 1807 and came here in 1837. In 1863 he left to head an insurance company in Buffalo, died there in 1866. ______________________________ ------=_NextPart_000_04C0_01C152C1.85E61A20 Content-Type: message/rfc822; name="Fw_ submission_ David Quincy Bio. David Quincy, a prominent and well-to-do farmer of Mentor township, Lake county, Ohio, is a man who has made his won way in the world and is justly entitled to the place he occupies among the representative men of the county. Mr. Quincy was born in Northamptonshire, England, February 18, 1834, son of Josiah and Rebecca (Drage) Quincy, also natives of that place. His father died at the age of fifty-two-years, and his mother at seventy-five. They had a family of nine children, three of whom emigrated to America. His father being a farmer, David was reared to agricultural pursuits, and has been engaged in farming all his life. When he was nine years old he worked out, receiving thirty-six cents a week. In 1854 he sailed from Liverpool for New York, landing at the destination after a voyage of nine weeks and four days. From that city he went to Rutland, Vermont, where he found employment as a farm hand and where he continued as such until the war came on. In the fall of 1861 he enlisted in Company D, Seventh Vermont Volunteer Infantry, and went South with his command. He participated in the battle of Pearl River, Louisiana, and was at Baton Rouge and Grand Gulf. At the time he entered the service he weighed 187 pounds, and in les than a year, when he was honorably discharged on account of disability, he was reduced to 96 pounds! He was promoted to Sergeant, but was discharged before he ever got to fill the office. After leaving the army Mr. Quincy returned to Vermont and remained there one year. Then he came to Lake County, Ohio, and settled in Mentor township, where he has since resided. Upon his arrival here he purchased land, to which he has added by subsequent purchase until he now the owner of 188 acres, all nicely improved. Mr. Quincy was married in the fall of 1863 to Jane Kelley, a native of Washington County, New York. After he father's death, which occurred in New York, her mother came to Ohio with her family and settled in Lake County, her death occurring some years later in Willoughby township. Mr. And Mrs. Quincy have six children: Emma, Belle, George, Myra, Willis, and David. Mr. Quincy is a member of the Masonic order and the James A. Garfield Post, No. 591, G.A.R., of Mentor, having served as Commander of the Post three years. Politically, he is a Republican, and has served in various local offices.
