Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" MIME-Version: 1.0 Jacob Rich, one of the most widely known residents of Seneca Township (Noble County), died in the old home farm, Tuesday morning, Jan., 9, 1900, of ailments incident to old age. For the following we are indebted to the history of Noble County: Jacob Rich, son of Abraham Rich was born in a log cabin in Seneca Township in 1824. Early in life, he was inured to all the privations and hardships of pioneer life. After the death of his mother he was the eldest of the children, and the care of the family devolved upon him. In this school of toil and hardship he was reared. At the age of twenty-six he married Miss Jane Miley, daughter of Abraham Miley, one of the pioneers of Seneca township. To this union was born two sons and two daughters - Mary I. (Miley), William H., Rachel (Talbott), and Abraham M. The family are members of the M. E. church, in which Mr. Rich had been a class-leader for about fifty years. He was a Republican in politics and one of the representative men of Seneca township. Mr. Rich commenced upon 120 acres, which is a part of the farm upon which he passed his days and died. This land was slightly improved when he purchased it, and all of which he was in debt for. To this farm he added from time to time until he was the owner of six hundred acres of valuable land. In 1862-3, he made an extended trip to the far west, visiting Nebraska, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, British America and California, traveling over 3000 miles and experiencing some lively adventures. On one occasion, he was captured by Indians and came near losing his life. On the Borsha river, his boat was capsized, and by his presence of mind and courage he rescued some of the party that otherwise would have been lost. He had a similar experience on the Platte river, where he again came near losing his life. The culmination of his misfortunes was a shipwreck on the Pacific Ocean. Mr. Rich was on of the most highly respected farmers of Seneca township and will be greatly missed in the church, as well as in the community in which he resided. He held the highest respect of all his acquaintances, and none knew him but all honor him. The remains of the deceased were interred in the Mt. Ephraim cemetery, (Seneca Township, Noble County), Thursday, the services were conducted by Herbert Davison of Sarahsville, pastor of the M. E. church, of which he was a member. Ephraim, (Noble County), Sunday about 4 o'clock p. m. and died that night about five hours after the injury. Mr. Miley had his horse running in the barn yard where the corn crib is located. At feeding time, in the evening he took a basket to the corn crib and got corn intending to stable the horses and feed them. The horses crowded around him and one of them playfully whirled and kicked its feet catching Mr. Miley in the side. The blow was so powerful that six of his ribs were broken, three of them in two pieces, and his liver mashed into a pulp. The unfortunate man never regained consciousness from then until he died. The funeral was held today (Wednesday) at Mount Ephraim, burial in Mt. Ephraim cemetery. Mr. Miley was a prosperous and progressive farmer, a good citizen and one of nature's noblemen.
