Tina - --------------------------- Xenia Paper INVALID PERISHES IN FIRE THAT DESTROYS FARM HOUSE FRIDAY Mrs. Newton Smith, 76, Victim Of Lower Bell- brook Pike Blaze ___________ Mrs. Minerva Smith, about 75, was burned to death when a fire, following what is believed to have been an explosion of a coal oil cook stove in the kitchen, destroyed the six-room, two-story farm residence in which she made her home with her two sons, Ollie and Roy, on a farm on the Lower - Bellbrook Pike, five miles southwest of Xenia, at 10 o'clock Friday morning. The aged woman, who had been a semi-invalid for a number of years because of rheumatism, was alone in the house at the time and was in the kitchen engaged in preparing the noon meal when her sons left on a trip to Spring Valley. Half an hour later it is presumed the stove either exploded, burning her so badly that she was trapped in the room and unable to escape, or that her clothing became ignited from the flames, which subsequently set fire to the house. The farm house, situated atop a high hill, was a mass of flames when the blaze was first noticed by Samuel Knee, a neighbor. Fanned by a stiff wind, the flames gained headway and neighboring farmers who gathered at the residence watched helplessly, unable to combat the fire and unaware that anyone was inside. The Smith brothers returned home before the house was completely burned down with its contents. The charred body of the woman burned almost beyond recognition, was discovered when the ruins were searched. The remains were removed to the undertaking establishment of Ralph M. Neeld, pending completion of funeral arrangements. Loss to the building and contents is estimated at several thousand dollars. It is not known whether the property was insured. Mrs. Smith is survived, besides her two sons, by two daughters, Mrs. Benjamin Kennedy, of the Union neighborhood, and Mrs. Mollie Owens, Chicago, Ill; and a niece, Mrs. John A. Simison, Dayton Ave. Xenia. Her husband, Newton Smith, preceded her in death about eight years. Another son John, also died several years ago. Coroner Frank M. Chambliss and E. A. Davis, county road patrolman, were summoned, the coroner giving a verbal verdict of accidental death. Xenia Paper VICTIM ON MONDAY Funeral services for Mrs. Minerva Smith, 75, who lost her life when fire destroyed her farm home on the Lower Bellbrook Pike Friday morning, will be conducted at Woodland Cemetery Chapel at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. Burial will be made in Woodland Cemetery. Coroner F. M. Chambliss attributed the blaze to the probable explosion of a coal oil cook stove in the kitchen where the aged woman, who was alone in the house was engaged in preparing the noon meal. It is the opinion that Mrs. Smith, who was a semi-invalid was trapped by the flames and was unable to summon help or escape from the burning dwelling. ______________________________ ------=_NextPart_000_053C_01C152C1.ACEC0800 Content-Type: message/rfc822; name="Obit_ Andrew Smith- Xenia.eml" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="Obit_ Andrew Smith- Xenia.eml" X-Message: #6 Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2001 11:01:02 -0500 From: Tina Hursh To: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L@rootsweb.com Message-Id: <1.5.4.32.20010917160102.01863ba8@clubnet.isl.net> Subject: Obit: Andrew Smith- Xenia Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Xenia Paper ANDREW N.
