George DAWSON'S little child is sick with congestion of the bowels. Thomas McKEE, and old citizen, is dangerously sick. Our lady friends are making it lively house cleaning. Mr. BEERLINE intends building a new blacksmith shop. Ed. HALE has built an addition to his domicile. TAWAWA (Green Twp.): The Loramie Horse Company meets at Dawson Saturday. The saw mill here is to be rebuilt this summer and burrs put in for grinding corn and feed. A number of our young folks enjoyed themselves at the reservoir at Berlin Sunday. Wheat looks poorer here than for several years. The tile mill is running here. J. H. CATTERLIN will teach the Houston school this winter. Our township treasurer and trustees are still trying to settle. ANGLE STREET (Cynthian Twp.): Some of the farmers are planting corn. Oats look well. The wheat looks poor. The Hopewell Sabbath school was organized last Sunday afternoon with James LUTTERELL, superintendant; Isaac SNIDER, assistant superintendant; Hettie PRETTZMAN, librarian; Allie BABYLON, organist; W. E. SNOW, secretary and treasurer. The young folks, and a goodly number of old folks, attend the school. Charles PRETTZMAN, formerly of this place, now of Indiana, was on a visit to his friends here last week. Miss Mattie LANDIS is teaching the North Angel Street school. BOTKINS (Dinsmore Twp.): Another election was held on Monday with same results as before. Ervin HILBRANT was elected Marshal of Botkins by twenty majority. Philip SHEETS--The town is ours once more. J. J. SULLIVAN--I told you, boys, this would be our town. Jacob ZANGELEIN--The voice of the people is our best law. P. W. SPEAKER--They had the wires laid but we got on to just some faction. Firemen at the D handle factory--If they had only stopped running I could have made twenty votes and beat 'em. A. BOTKINS and A. HENSKY are buying cattle. Jos. GUTMAN shipped a car load of milch cows to Cincinnati. J. B. GREVE--I can beat any lexicon spelling. SWANDERS (Franklin Twp.): A. G. MANIER is painting his dwelling. Mrs. E. SHAFFER is visiting relatives at Marion, Indiana. Harry KILLION returned last week from a visit to Lima. Mrs. Kate NIEMAN has opened a dressmaking ship in the DUNSBARGER property. Oliver FORRAR has gone to Anna to clerk in the KRAPP bakery. John ZISSLER is working at the carpenter trade under George LOSCH. William CAREY and E. GREEN are working in the spoke factory at Anna. I. MAULT, of Paulding county, stopped here Monday; he will work for G. STANGLE this summer. Grant KISER and David EVANS are traveling as teamsters with BARTINE'S circus. HARDIN (Turtlecreek Twp.): Some corn planted. Mrs. H. V. WILSON and Mrs. Bennett LENOX are on the sick list. Miss Jennie JOHNSTON, of Sidney, was the guest of Miss Ada BELL over Sunday. John M. HOEL has moved into part of the house occupied by Mrs. W. R. MARSHALL. Mrs. MESSENGER, of Jackson county, returned home Wednesday of last week, after a week's visit to her daughter, Mrs. J. K. GIBSON. Wilbur McCUNE, of Sidney, spent Saturday and Sunday with his sister, Mrs. H. R. BELL. Edward DABE, of Newport, who is to teach our school next year, contemplates moving here in the near future. After a week's visit at home, H. E. WRIGHT returned to Dayton, where he is attending commercial school. L. A. PATTEN came home on Monday from Piqua, where he has been for several weeks. The Rev. J. K. GIBSON went to Cincinnati on Tuesday to attend Commencement at Lane Seminary. CAREYSVILLE (Anybody know the Township?): J. L. BODY, assignee of John MONK, is disposing of his stock of goods by a protracted auction. Thomas CAIN will remove his store to the room now occupied by BODY, as soon as it is vacated. Mrs. Anna PICKERING, a widow lady living just south of Careysville, was greatly and agreeably suprised last Monday by a large number of her friends taking possession of her home in her absence (which was a premeditated arrangement) (birthday celebration) Married April 22, 1888, by the Rev. M. MILLER, Vincent STURMS and Miss Ettie LEMMON, all of Carysville. Born April 27, 1888, a son to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel MITCHELL. Mrs. Hattie LEMMON, who has been quite sick, is convalescent. Levi PARK has his house burned to the ground last Friday evening. The fire was caused by a defective flue. Nearly all the contents of the house were saved. Edler ROBERTS, of this village, held his quarterly meeting at Tawawa church, in Shelby county, last Saturday and Sunday. Rev. E. M. RAPP, a former pastor of the Christian church in this place, filled the pulpit last Sabbath morning by the request of a little Sabbath school scholar. Peter CLEM and family, of St. Paris, were the guests of L. C. CLEM last Sabbath. Elder FENNER and wife, of Sidney, attended church here last Sunday, to heard Elder E. M. RAPP's discourse deliverfed here to his former charge. Mrs. Sallie SEELEY is visiting relatives in St. Paris and Adison this week. COLLINS and daughter have gone on a visit to Washington, D. C., and Absecom, New Jersey. ECHARD & FISHER have opened a photograph gallery in the old KAH building on the east side of Main Street. Dr. Walter TENNEY and wife, nee Anna FITZGERALD, of West Milton, visited relatives in Sidney over Sunday. W. A. SKILLEN has been appointed night policeman to fill the unexpired term--until June 25--of J. C. HAINES. Dr. LORIMER, of Morrow county, has located in Sidney and opened an office in Mrs. HALE'S residence, on Court Street. Hudson GARTLEY attended the Grand Encampment I.O.O.F., at Cleveland this reek. He is the representative from this district. ***Harry and Mable, aged fourteen and twelve, children of Mr. and Mrs. David SHAFFER, of Port Jefferson, both died Thursday of spinal fever. ***The Rev. J. D. LAUER, of Fletcher, died last Saturday. He was well known to most of the citizens in the southeastern part of this county. A horse belonging to Harrison POTTS, who lives on North Miami street, ran into a barbed wire fence on Tuesday and was severely hurt. Peter EHLERS, of Franklin Township, and Henry BRYANT, of Sidney, have been granted pensions, and Samuel JACOBS, of Salem Township, has had his pension increased. Cory HARE, living in the southeast corner of this county, has a horse, wagon and set of harness stolen last Friday night. The thief has not been arrested nor the property recovered. Alonzo BURCAW has accepted a position in the freight house at Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he expects to make his future home. He will remove his family there during the summer. T. J. BAYLY has been awaded the contract for repairing the roof of the court house. He does the work for $240, and stipulates that if he fails to keep the water out he will receive no pay. The Rev. W. WITTER, of Jamestown, Greene county, has accepted the call of the congregation of the Baptist Church and will preach here every other week for the present year. J. C. BURCH, of Louisville, Kentucky, traveling passenger agent of the Chicago & Alton railway, was in Sidney on Tuesday. He was almost fully recovered from the injuries he received in a wreck on the Cincinnati Southern railway in December. As William PROTZMAN, a driver in the employ of J. M. BLUE, was coming down the orbison hill with a load of logs on Monday, his team failed to check the wagon, which ran off the pike over the embankment and overturned. PROTZMAN saved himself by jumping, and but slight damage was done the team and wagon. Benjamin F. FULTON, of Portland, Indiana, who formerly lived in Sidney, writes to persons here that he believes gas in paying quantities can be found close to town. ***DEATH OF ERASMUS BRUCE TOLAND Erasumus Bruce TOLAND, one of the pioneers of Shelby county, died in Dinsmore township on Friday. He was born in Berkley county, Virginia, on September 29, 1802. When 27 years old he left that State for Ohio and located in Miami county. In 1833 he moved to Dinsmore township and remained one of its residents fifty-five years. About eight months ago, when in the act of putting his hand in his pocket for his knife, with the intention of cutting shavings to build the morning fire, he was stricken with paralysis. to some extent he recovered from the effects, and for one of his age was in ordinary good health until a few days after the spring election. He was the first person in his township to vote the Whig ticket, and is said to have never missed voting at a State or other important election. He was married three times and was the father of fifteen children, eight of whom--three girls and five boys--and his widow, survive him. He was buried on Sunday in the old burial ground on his original farm where, fifty years ago, when there were no neighbors to aid him, he along interrred one of his children, the first person there buried. T. F. SHAW, dealer in sewing machines, having recently moved into a new room in the Citizen's Bank building, is making his new quarters known by exhibiting machine embroidery work that would be an attraction in novelties that one would expect to see at the rival centennial exhibitions. Shepherd Nora K. Shepherd 87, died at 11:30 a. m. at Lima Memorial Hospital. She was born 25 April in Shelby County ,the daughter of Jeremiah and Ellen (Alice A) Brown Chambers. On 17 April, 1913 she married Cary F. Shepherd who died 17 June, 1975. Mrs Shepherd was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the First Assembly of God Church and a member of the Women's Missionary Council. Survivors include a son Floyd H. Shepherd of Harrod; two daughters Mrs. Leroy( Virginia) Gesler and Betty J. Farler both of Lima 11 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was married to George Millhoff July, 1889. To this union were born seven children of whom six, with her husband survive. They are: Mrs. Made Karnehm, of Piqua; Mrs. Mary Evans, of New Weston; Mrs. Margaret Brandt, of Dayton; and Mrs. Goldie Van Horn, of Sidney, with whom she made her home; Edd Millhoff, of Dayton; Henry Millhoff, of Piqua. She is also survived by four brothers, Harley Rich, Grover Rich, of Sidney; Bud Rich and William Rich, of Piqua; and one sister, Mrs. Etta Marot, of Columbus. There are fourteen grandchildren and three great-granchildren. When she was in good health, she attended the Baptist church. Millhoff, 81, of 122 North Brooklyn Avenue, at Miami County fair grounds where he suffered a heart attack. He was removed to the Stouder Memorial hospital there but was dead on arrival. He had been in very good health up until the time of his death and had reviewed the Troy fair durig the afternoon and seemed to be in his usual good spirits up to the fatal heart attack, which came when had wandered over to a bench and was lying down resting. He had gone to the fair with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Evans, of Maria Stein; Mr. and Mrs. Grover Rich and Al Strete, of this city, and had seemed to enjoy visiting the various points of interest on the grounds. Born August 28, 1864, in Shelby County, he was the son of the late James Henry and Martha Ann Butler Millhoff. He was united in marriage to Miss Ida Rich, of Shelby county, in August, 1890, and they were the parents of six children, his wife preceded him in death passing away on May 17, 1938. He is survived by the following children, Mrs. Goldie Van Horn, of 122 North Brooklyn Avenue with whom he made his home; Mrs. Maude Horner, Piqua; Henry Millhoff, Piqua; Mrs. Mary Evans, Maria Stein; Mrs. Harry Brandt (Margaret) Dayton; Edward Millhoff, Dayton. There are 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who also survive. Three of his grandsons are in the armed forces and are: Cpl. Charles E. Van Horn, Camp Wheeler, GA.; Sgt. Harold Van Horn, in China; and James H. Millhoff Jr., in the U.S. navy. The funeral services have been tentatively set for Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Kerr Mortuary under the direction of Rev. B. Stephen Topalian, of the Baptist church, with burial in Graceland cemetery. Friends may call at the Kerr Mortuary Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday until time for the services. All excepting the past few years of his life had been spent in Shelby Couty where he had followed the vocation of farming. He moved to Piqua last December. Surviving William Rich with his widow, Mrs. Julia Catherine Millhoff Rich, are three sons and one daughter, who are Thurman Rich, of Dayton; Albert and Wallace Rich, of Piqua; Mrs. Bessie Bodey, of Piqua. Fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also mourn his passing with the following sisters and brothers: Harley Rich and Grover Rich, of Sidney; Bud Rich, of Piqua, and Mrs. Etta Marott, of Columbus. Funeral services were held on from the Stuber funeral home in Fletcher. Internment was made in Graceland cemetery in Sidney. Born in Shelby County May 8, 1871, he was the son of James and Justina Blue Rich. Surviving are a son, Fred Rich, also of the Miami County Home; three daughters, Mrs. George Burch (Helen) of Bradford, Mrs. Clyde Shroyer (Elsie) and Mrs. Charles Black (Vera), both of Piqua; a brother, Grover Rich of Sidney, 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife the former Roberta Glick, is deceased. The Rev. Roger Kincaid will conduct servies at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Jamieson Funeral Home with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday after 3 p.m. and until the time of the services Wednesday.
