Cokonougher" To: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: Subject: Mar record: Harold Hester & Nora Spurgeon, 1926, Ross Co Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed MIME-Version: 1.0 The following marriage record is for Ross County, Ohio residents Harold Hester and Nora Spurgeon. They ran off to Greenup, Kentucky to get married, where they lied about their age. The marriage record will reflect that fact. Two other discrepancies on the marriage record should be noted. The proper spelling for the husband's residence should be "Lyndon", not "Linden", and the mother of the wife was "Lillie Mae Levy", not "Lillie Mae Leang". Nora and Harold were my grandparents. I once asked my grandmother to tell me how she and my grandfather had met. She replied, in her usual humble manner, "I met your grandpa at the Beechgrove Church at a social. He asked me to dance. I was scared to death. I thought I was ugly and he wouldn't ask me again, but he did." The Beechgrove Church was on Lower Twin Road in Twin Township of Ross County, near intersection of Lower Twin Road and Porter Hollow Road. There is nothing left at the location now except a few pieces of cement and open field. "REGISTER OF MARRIAGE. Full names of parties: Husband - Harold Hester. Wife - Nora Spurgeon. It looks like those used at funerals of the era. I have copied it just as it is, spelling, punctuation, and all. "Scripture read by Rev. Charles P. Taylor. John II:I-37. Message 'Why Jesus Wept'. Saturday January 17, 1942. Harald Dwight Junior Son of Mr. & Mrs. Harald Hester was born November 9, 1941 and departed this life January 1942. He leaves to mourn his loss five sisters all at home on Lower Twin. Viola, Martha, Dorthy, Mary and Elizabath. Herald Dwight Junior also had one brother Lawrence. He leaves also two grand mothers. Mr. & Mrs. Frand Hester who reside on lower twin, and Mrs. Lillie Spuregon of lower twin. "There is a reaper whose name is death, And with his sickle keen, He reaps the bearded grain at a breath And the flowers which grow between: Shall I have nought that is fair? saith he; Have nought but the bearded grain? Though the breath of these flowers is sweet to me, I will give them all back again. He gazed at the flowers with tearful eyes, He kissed their drooling leaves- - It was for the Lord of Paradise He bound them into sheaves. My Lord hath need of these flowers gay, The reaper said, and smiled; Dear token of the earth are they, Where he was once a child. They all shall bloom in fields of light, Transplaned by my care. And saints upon their garments white These sacred blossoms wear. And the mother gave in tears and pain The flowers she most did love; She knew she would find them all again In fields of light above. O, not in cruelty, not in wrath, The reaper came that day; Twas an angel visited this green earth And took the flower away."" _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ______________________________ ------------------------------ X-Message: #4 Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 03:19:46 -0500 From: "Cynthia Martin" To: OH-FOOTSTEPS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: Subject: BURNS, GARRETT, MOORE, TURNER, Ohio Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed MIME-Version: 1.0 The following information is from a BURNS family history that my grandmother put together dated 1965. I have not been researching for very long, so most of the information has not been verified. Also, I believe most of these people lived in Belmont County, Ohio. BURNS- My brickwall has been my gggrandfather, John Neal BURNS. He married Sarah Jane GARRETT. They had 8 children which includes my ggrandfather, Brady Mortimer BURNS. Brady married Lizzie M. MOORE in 1879. They had 3 children which includes my granfather William Brady BURNS. GARRETT- I don't have much information on the GARRETT's. I know that the GARRETT's came from England. I do not know anything about the family except that there were 2 sons and three daughters: Samuel James Bessie Mary Sarah Jane(my gggrandmother) I also have a list of Samuel GARRETT's children: Florence Belle Rena Annie John James Simeon Mary remained single and spent her life helping other members of the family. After her father remarried, the second wife rejected her and she was complelled to live with other members of the family. It is said that her brother-in-law rode double with her from near Parkersburg to Martins Ferry to get her away from ill treament. Later it is said that she lived with her half brother Mendel GARRETT. TURNER- James TURNER came to the U.S. in 1818 from Leeds, England. He spent some time in Philadelphia and Steubenville arriving in Martins Ferry in 1931. In Martins Ferry he sought a location for a woolen mill and purchased two acres of land between 6th and 7th streets and County Road and Hickory Sts., and built a mill on the site. While the new mill was being erected he rented a mill at Treasway Hollow. His daughter, Ann, and James MOORE were married in the new mill. There were just 4 families living in Martins Ferry when the TURNER's arrived, or more accurately, 4 houses as follows: the SWARTZ, The Buckeye Glass Works, the SNODGRASS home and the SEABRIGHT home. The first Methodist meeting held in Martins Ferry was held in the Turner Woolen Mill. James TURNER, Mr. FINNEMORE and Jacob RIDER promoted the first church in Martins Ferry on the site of the present Methodist Church on Third St. The TURNER children were: Joseph b. 06/13/1811 Ann b. 11/16/1815 d. 04/05/1887 William b. 02/07/1817 d. 01/26/1838 James b. 06/29/1819 Sarah Jane b. 06/11/1821 d. 09/05/1837 Caroline b. 10/18/1823 Charles R. b. 01/18/1827 MOORE- Ann GARRETT came to the U.S. when she was 3 years old in 1818. She spent some time in Philadelphia and Steubenville and walked with her father to Martins Ferry in 1831. Was married to James MOORE in the new Woolen Mill about 1836 and became the mother of 11 children: Sarah Jane b. 09/29/1837 d. 02/11/1861 William B. b. 03/29/1839 d. 05/20/1929 James T. b. 04/29/1841 d. 07/29/1874 Cyrus S. b. 03/09/1843 d. 04/02/1906 Laura F. b. 02/09/1845 d. 08/05/1938 Charles R. b. 01/29/1848 d. 12/15/1926 John b. 07/11/1851 d. 09/16/1900 Warren W. b. 11/01/1853 d. 10/07/1926 Edward N. b. 09/30/1856 d. 03/12/1857 Lizzie M. b. 11/26/1858 d. 04/20/1930 Elmer E. b. 06/22/1861 d. 11/25/1939 If anyone has information to add, especially on John Neal BURNS, I would appriciate it.
