The Hester family celebrated its 175th year in Ohio and 208th year in America with a family reunion at Ft. Hill State Park on Sunday, Sept. 2. The family members enjoyed a covered dish dinner, baseball games, and pleasant conversation. The oldest person attending was Mrs. Mattie Adams, 89, Cynthiana, and the youngest attending was Miss Amy Hester, 2 weeks, of Greenfield. Members attending are the descendants of John Lawrence and Mary Margaret Hoerster who emigrated to America in 1771 from the Kingdom of Hanover, Germany. Upon their arrival in America at Philadelphia, they and their children were sold as a family unit into indentured servitude for a term of six years, in order to pay the $300 cost of their passage. However, their master treated them with such great cruelty that friends were moved to loan them the money to free themselves after one year of service. The master refused to decrease the debt by so much as one cent for the year's service already rendered. Thereafter, the Hoerster (Hester) family moved to Greene County, Pa. John and Mary Hoerster had ten children, one of whom was called Henry Hester and who married Rebecca Roberts and moved to Lower Twin Creek in Ross County, Ohio in 1804. Henry Hester operated one of the first oil mills, sawmills, and gristmills in the county, and fought as a Captain on the Ohio frontier in the War of 1812. Henry and Rebecca Hester had eight children: Zacheus, Henry, Charles, Jackson, Rebecca, Lucretia, James, and Jane Hester. James Hester married Rebecca Hixson and had six children: Emily, Wm. Henry, Daniel, Elsie, Sarah, and David Hester. David married Mary Jane Grieves and had eight children: Hazel, Elmer, Meryl, Bessie, Valley, Margaret, Ruth, and Donald Hester. Zacheus, the brother of James Hester, took over the ownership of the family mills just before the death of his parents in The Great Typhoid Epidemic of 1833. Zacheus was a carpenter as well as a miller and farmer, and made many of the coffins that sheltered the bodies of Ohio's first settlers. He married Margaret Hixson, the daughter of pioneer Timothy Hixson, and had twelve children: Daniel, Sarah, Rebecca, Rose, Timothy, John, Zacariah, William, Taylor, Joseph, Jackson, and Rachel Hester. Zacheus's son Joseph married Hannah E. Long, the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Long, and had three children: Hattie, Frank, and Myrtle Hester. Joseph's son Frank married Rosa Clark, the daughter of William and Mary Clark, and had seven children: Robert, Oscar, Hazel, Harry, Floyd, Harold, and Leslie Hester.
