He served for three years in the 111th O.V.I., being with Sherman on the march to the sea, and participating in many battles, in one of which he received gunshot wound in the leg, breaking several bones and incapacitating him for duty. (Clyde Enterprise, January 18, 1917) WAS WAR VETERAN AND A PIONEER _____ ELIAS BABIONE, NATIVE OF BALLVILLE, WAS FOUND DEAD BY WIFE. Fought In Many Important Battles In Civil War and Was Wounded ---- Funeral Monday ---- Many Relatives and Friends Survive. Elias Babione, for many years a prominent Ballville township resident, was found dead in bed at his late residence, a mile and a half south of Fremont, early Saturday morning by his wife. His death was due to the infirmities of his years, combined with a stroke which he probably suffered during the night. He retired early Friday night apparently in his usual health and spirits. For several years, Mr. Babione had been in failing health. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at the Ballville village church, conducted by Rev. W.E. Tressel, and the remains will be interred in Oakwood cemetery. The late Mr. Babione was a life-long resident of Ballville, a veteran of the Civil war and a pioneer who had a large circle of friends. Elias Babione was a member of one of the oldest and best known families in Sandusky county and a native of Ballville township where he was born April 11, 1843, the son of John and Mary Reineck Babione. His father, a native of Germany, came to this country in 1793 and first located in Virginia and later in Fairfield county, Ohio, and finally with his family made his way to Sandusky county where they secured some government land and located in the wilderness. These hardy pioneers lived here in the times when encounters with Indians were not infrequent and amid the hardships of the primitive days. Elias Babione was reared in Ballville and always followed agricultural pursuits until old age and ill health prevented. At one time he owned considerable land, on August 11, 1862, he enlisted in Fremont for service in the Union army and served in the Civil war as a member of Co. A, 111th O.V.I. and saw much hard fighting. He participated in 38 battles among them Knoxville, Nashville, Stone River, Resaca, Decatur, Alabama and others. He was with Sherman on the famous march to the sea and was also in the siege of Atlanta. He had his leg shot and broken in one battle and for a time was incapacitated from duty owning to the gun shot wound and broken bones. He was mustered out at Cleveland in July, 1865, with a spledid record. On March 28, 1867, Mr. Babione was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Ott, also a pioneer of this section, who survives. They became the parents of the following children; William, who died at the age of four; Hattie, who married Frank Baumann, of Ballville; Lester, of Clyde; Reuben, Ella, Roy, Ray, Clarence and one who died in infancy. There are 11 grandchildren. Mr. Babione also had a number of brothers and sisters but they preceded him to the grave. In politics Mr. Babione was always an ardent Democrat and for six years served his township as trustee. He had been a member of Eugene Rawson post, G.A.R., for many years. He was a man widely known and always highly esteemed in the community and his death marks the passing of another of those sturdy pioneers who aided in developing this section of the county into the present beautiful and prosperous territory.
