Peter Burgoon died at 2 o'clock A.M. Feb. 17, 1879, at his residence northwest of Fremont. He had been afflicted for some time with disease of the kidneys which, with other diseases, slowly wore out his life. Mr. Burgoon was born in Frederick county, Md., July 13, 1800. At the age of twenty-one years he was married to Miss Margaret Fleagle, and came to Ohio in 1824. After spending a few years in Perry county, Ohio, he came to this city, then called Lower Sandusky, in 1829. Here he followed his trade, that of a mason, for some years. His workmanship is displayed in the elegant residence of Dr. La Q. Rawson, which was the third brick building erected in the city. Many years ago he retired to his farm in section nine, Sandusky township, and devoted his time to its improvement and cultivation. During his residence of half a century he was intimately identified with the interests and progress of the county. He filled places of public trust and never failed to perform his duties as such with extraordinary fidelity. Although a staunch Democrat, he was a true patriot, and when the War of the Rebellion came he stood out a firm and true friend of the Union. Mr. Burgoon was the father of five sons and five daughters, of whom three sons and four daughters survive him. Of the sons, one died of sickness, and the other was killed accidentally on a railroad on which he was employed - both had arrived at manhood. One daughter was burned to death in childhood. To these sons and daughters were born twenty sons and thirty-three daughters, and to these eight sons and eight daughters. The number of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Mr. Burgoon and his wife Margaret, being now seventy-nine, of whom there are now living twenty-five males and forty females, or sixty-five in all, who were born before his death. The wife of Mr. Burgoon and mother of his children, suddenly passed to the better world June 8, 1871, by apoplexy, in the 70th year of her age, since which time Mr. Burgoon had remained unmarried; may they be re-united in the better world toward which all mortals are hastening. The funeral of Mr. Burgoon took place from his late residence Wednesday morning. Rev. E. Bushnell of the Presbyterian Church officiating. A large number of the citizens of Fremont, attending, accompanied the remains of their deceased friend to his interment at the burial ground at the Four-mile House, where lie the bodies of his wife and two sons. The daughter was buried in the Bowlus family burying ground. Very rare is the occasion that such a body of mourners have been called to stand around the grave of their departed head. For several years Mr. Burgoon had been a faithful member of Brainard Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, of this city. About sixty of the brethren of the Lodge, Pastmaster Dr. R.H. Rice, officiating, attended the last obsequies of our departed brother, and with solemn ceremonies of the brotherhood, deposited his mortal remains for their final rest. The following is an extract from the sermon of Rev. E. Bushnell, and contains a portion of the data of the preceding, yet it is so different, and withal more full that we give it also: Peter Burgoon was born in Frederick Co., Md., July 18, 1800. He belongs to a large family of children. At the age of 21 he was married to Miss Margaret Fleagle, who belongs to a family of 16 children. In 1824 they came to Ohio, and lived 3 years in Perry Co. In 1829 they located on the farm where he died. For 12 years Mr. Burgoon followed his trade in Lower Sandusky, - he was a mason. There they took up their residence in the unbroken wilderness which stretched from the turnpike to Lake Erie. There were no clearings, I am told, except the Whitaker place on the river, and the farms of the Bowlus family. Here both have died, though not till they had seen the wilderness melt away and give place to fertile fields and comfortable homes. Mrs. Burgoon died June 8, 1871, suddenly in her 70th year. To this pioneer pair were born 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters. To them have been born 58 grandchildren 20 grandsons and 38 grand daughters, and to them 16 great - grandchildren, viz., 8 great-grandsons and 8 great - grand- daughters. Mr. Burgoon, therefore lived to see the birth of 79 persons descended from him. Of these there are now living, 3 sons, 14 grandsons, 8 great-grandsons, and 4 daughters, 28 granddaughters and 8 great-granddaughters, 65 in all. In these days when ungodliness destroys so much human life, before or after birth, let large families receive especial and honorable mention. Mr. Burgoon has lived a plain, quiet life, and been held in esteem by his children and neighbors. After a winter of debility and suffering he had finally succumbed to the inroads of sickness and the infirmities of age, having reached the unusual age of 78 years 8 months and 4 days. Those who subdued the wilderness, and bore all the labors of pioneer life, are worthy of especial honor at our hands. How rapidly are their numbers now diminishing! Let us bury them with tenderness, - strive to be as valiant and faithful as they, and remember that before long we shall be lying beside them. This winter I have been called to bury seven men whose aggregate ages are 553 years, 5 mon. 11 days, or on an average 79 years, 28 days. Burgoon With the passing away of Mrs. Mary Binkley Carnicomb (familiarly known as Aunt Polly), youngest daughter of John Binkley, whose death occurred Nov. 12, 1915, aged 74 years, the old cabin home of the Binkleys is now vacant, silent and deserted, after an occupancy of 75 years. The old, familiar, pioneer home occupied by the Binkleys for the past three-quarters of a century in Sandusky township, has always been known as one of the hospitable homes of the earlier times. It was erected by John Binkley, Sr., about 1840 on his arrival with his family from Perry Co., Ohio. It has seen the passing from its door great- grandfathers and mothers, grandfather and mother with 12 stalwart children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for several generations, and Aunt Polly, the last called home, has ceased to occupy it. Who can tell of the sacred memories that cluster around its abandoned hearth stone by the descendants of this good old pioneer family. Some few days ago I rode by the old Peter Burgoon homestead on the Oak Harbor road, also in Sandusky township. I observed with sadness the dilapidated, deserted and silent home which with the original log cabin erected in 1829 had sheltered from summer rains and winter storms the Burgoon family during the greater part of the last century, father, mother and ten rugged sons and daughters. This was one of the first homes established in the dense forest of the Black Swamp in that part of the country, between Muscalonge creek and Lake Erie and was known far and wide for its hospitality among the earlier settlers of the now almost forgotten Black Swamp. Many were the choppings, huskings, loggings, quilting bees and apple parings held in this old house, attended by the lads and lassies of the neighborhood, winding up at night with the song and dance. How changed now. The old house stands vacant, the occupants gone, the place is silent. The song, the mirth, the laughter hushed, the pleasant associations, as well, all swallowed up by that relentless river of time, leaving scarcely a memory of this well known pioneer home of the earlier days of Sandusky county. As I rode and mused on the wonderful changes wrought in the vicinity, in the century past, those lines by Prentice came to my mind, "Remorseless time, fierce spirit of the glass and scythe; what power can stay him in his silent course, or melt his iron heart to pity: on, on, still on, he presses and forever. * * * Dark, stern, all pitiless and pauses not, amid the mighty works that strew his path, to sit and muse like other conquerors, upon the fearful ruin he has wrought." Note: This article was written by Isadora H. Burgoon, son of Peter and Margaret (Fleagle) Burgoon. It was published in the 1916 Yearbook of the Sandusky Pioneer & Historical Association and included a photograph of the Peter Burgoon homestead. --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
