This cemetery is located in the Old Brooklyn area of Cleveland, on Broadview Road, just north of Spring Road. A new cemetery marker will also be dedicated at that time. The marker was purchased with a grant from the Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation. This has been the project of the Historical Society of Old Brooklyn, Neil Richardson, President (216-661-3612). We are compiling (from a number of sources) a list of people who are/were buried there--it is believed that when the cemetery fell into dis-repair, some of the gravesites were relocated to other cemeteries. This list will be distributed to those who attend the ceremony, as well as a map of this very small cemetery in which about 60 people were buried. The last burial in this cemetery took place in 1923, and a portion of the cemetery was sold to a private owner for back taxes at some point. There is now a restaurant built on the corner of Broadview and Spring, covering a portion of the original cemetery boundaries. The guest speaker at this formal ceremony will be local councilwoman Merle Gordon. A brief history of the cemetery will be given by Lynette Filips, who wrote a two-part history of the cemetery that was published in the Old Brooklyn News. Also, descendants of three different families who have ancestors buried there will be present, with at least one of them telling their family history. The cemetery is maintained by the City of Cleveland. The Historical Society of Old Brooklyn has planted flowers and taken care of the beautification of the cemetery each summer for the past five or more years. This cemetery is not listed on your website, and we believe it should be. Some very prominent local people in the history of this area of Cleveland are buried there, including members of the Brainard, Chester, and Fish families, early settlers in this area. Sincerely, Lorene Olsen Bowles, Secretary Historical Society of Old Brooklyn --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Ministers are supposed to take the precepts laid down in the Bible for their guide, in opposing vice in whatever guise it may appear. But, instead of doing this, may of them allow their political prejudices to outweigh all respect they may have for the Bible, and openly endorse and labor for the election of such a notorious character as Sandy Bateman. Mr. Alkire cannot plead ignorance of the lewd and lascivious "Charity Ball," gotten up and managed by Sandy Batemen, nor of the foul and filthy program that announced the date of the ball. He was long since made acquainted with the facts in the case, and to his credit be is said that on the Sunday after the "Charity Ball" was held, he denounced it from the pulpit in the most forcible language, and voted against Sandy when he aspired to the Mayoralty of Piketon. Now, what has caused the Rev. Alkire to turn a political summer sault, and land in the arms of Sandy? What motive can he have in defending and endorsing a man for a public office, whose offense against morality, and decency is scarcely equaled by the habitues of the vilest dens, that infest the purlieus of the great cities. ***as entertaining as that is, sorry folks it's the end of my page.
