He was sweeping in front of the den, when the bear reached out through the bars, caught him by the shoulder and held on until the flesh was torn to shreds. The man was removed to the City Hospital and his arm amputated, but he died soon afterward. The latter kept a bear chained in the rear of his lot. The child, venturing too near the animal, was seized by it, killed and partially devoured before the horror was discovered. Kerns was arrested. John Elwer, 80, widely known retired farmer, living one mile south of here, died suddenly Saturday at his home. Mr. Elwer, after his luncheon, walked from the house to his barn and there fell. He was carried into the home where he soon afterwards expired. For the last two days he had not been in his usual health, but was not confined to his bed. Mr. Elwer was born in Cincinnati and came to this section with his parents, when he was two years old. He was one of the oldest pioneers in this vicinity. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and of St. Joseph's Society. Of the six children who preceded him in death was Oliver who died about two months ago. He leaves five children, Albinus, Isadore, Mrs. Henry Fischer, Mrs. Otto Hellman and Mrs. Lawrence Lammers, all living south of Delphos. Funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Catholic Church. Mrs. Lammers was a member of St. John Catholic Church, Delphos, and its Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Delphos Senior Citizens.
