April 17, 1897 Columbus, Ohio SCHMIDT, LOTT ROBBED HIS BRIDE (AP) A requisition was issued at the governor's office for one Jacob SCHMIDT who is under arrest in Philadelphia and is wanted in Cincinnati for grand larceny. This case is a peculiar one. SCHMIDT absconded with his bride's money, and a question arose as to whether it could be considered theft, but Deputy Attorney General LOTT decided in as much as it was the woman's inheritance and no part of it was earned by the husband it was a clear case of larceny. The Cincinnati woman was SCHMIDT'S fourth wife, and he married her only five weeks after the death of his third wife. They went to a bank where her money was on deposit a few days after their marriage and drew out $1500 for use in taking a European wedding trip. The husband took charge of the money and skipped out without the bride. The chief of police at Cincinnati thought the man was in the business of marrying for money, and might turn out to be a much wanted man. Accordingly he made diligent efforts to get him. He finally located him in Philadelphia and had him arrested.
