Content-Disposition: Inline Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Democrat and Watchman Thurs. March 14, 1918 Circleville, Ohio Grandmother RIFE, In The Eighty Fourth Cycle of a Sweet Old Age About a month ago, Dr. B. R. BALES, her loving grandson, presented THE WATCHMAN with a recent photograph of Grandmother RIFE from which we had an engraving made. Some time ago, we made arrangement with the dear old lady to visit her at her home where she agreed to give us, for publication, some of the details of a long and eventful life. We were only waiting for the weather to be propitious to go and talk to her. But now she is gone in the silent watches of the night when none but God was near. She closed her weary eyes in sure and certain hope to wake again. She probably died of acute indigestion. She had been ill a day or two and relatives had been with her. On Saturday night, Mrs. STOUT gave her some medicine and saw her to bed. She appeared to sleep peacefully through the night but on Sunday morning she did not rise as usual and neighbors going into her room, found that soul and body had parted. Mary KIMMEY RIFE was born March 21, 1833, in this city and was a daughter of Peter and Margaret BARNHILL KIMMEY. She was married to Elias B. RIFE August 10, 1848. She is survived by three sons; E. K. RIFE, of Los Angeles, California; Harvey M RIFE, of Cleveland; Charles M. RIFE, of Columbus, and two daughters, Mrs. J. F. BALES and Mrs. Cyrus ABERNETHY of this city. She also leaves five grandchildren; Dr. B.R. BALES, Rea R. BALES, Misses Frances and Ruth ABERNETHY and Mrs. A.L. WILDER, all of Circleville, and six great-grandchildren as follows: Elizabeth and Foster, children of Dr. and Mrs. BALES; Mary Alice and Foster, children of Mr. and Mrs. R. R. BALES; Martha and Gardner, children of Mr. and Mrs. A.L. WILDER. In many respects Grandmother RIFE, was a remarkable woman. She had a good mind and at the church some months ago, made a talk to the congregation that was most interesting and edifying. She looked after her own business affairs and not withstanding her advanced age, she was always cheerful and optimistic. She was an ardent Methodist and since nine years of age, was a contributor to and a devoted member of the church of her choice. She was a Republican in politics and did not hesitate to declare her allegiance to the party of Lincoln. She believed in prohibition and contributed what she could to the overthrow of the drink evil. In Grandmother RIFE'S departure, the community mourns a worthy and dependable pioneer; her relatives a loving counselor and the church a devoted and loyal representative.
